Calling African Feminist MEL Experts

We are looking for an experienced consultant with expertise in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (ME&L) and with a special focus on women’s rights work in Africa to undertake a Baseline study for the Leading from the South (LFS) Phase two project.

The Assignment
AWDF seeks the services of experienced Feminist Translators /Interpreters who understand feminist language to engage in a long-term relationship of translating various documents from English into French and Arabic. In addition, services in interpretation in the aforementioned languages will also be required as and when needed during AWDF’s programmes. Occasionally, services for Sign Language interpretation will also be required in specific countries. It is in the light of these, that we invite qualified and interested Consultants to submit their proposals highlighting their experience and competencies in these fields.

Capacity Building Consultancy openings for African Feminists

For the last decade AWDF has complimented its grant making support with capacity building activities to ensure that women’s rights organisations who receive grants from AWDF have the right skills sets, support and capacity to sustain their women’s rights work and organisations in Africa. AWDF applies different methodologies including feminist coaching and skills training in its capacity building activities and these have produced effective results in many cases.

The African Women’s Development Fund’s team are saddened beyond words at the death of Innocent Chukwuma, former Director of Ford Foundation West Africa.

The Ford Foundation has been a long-standing partner of AWDF, and since 2017 Innocent led his team in numerous engagements with AWDF prior to and after AWDF was awarded a Ford Build grant. He was a highly engaged partner, always ready to provide support and perspective on any initiative. He made a profound impact on our work, going beyond the call of duty to build an enduring rapport that has thrived till date.

Innocent will be most remembered for his fervent belief, not only in the sanctity of women’s rights, but also in the drive for development in Africa, putting this zeal in everything he worked on. His deep understanding of the political context of women’s rights in Africa, and genuine interest in the work made him an invaluable partner for countless civil society organisations in Ghana and across the continent.

AWDF Co-Founder and Board Member Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi says: “Innocent Chukwuma was simply the best. With his sudden passing, African Civil Society has lost a great Thought Leader, the feminist movement has lost an unwavering ally and many of us have lost a dear brother and friend. Innocent always knew what was needed and necessary to strengthen the movements we need for social change. He will be sorely missed”.

AWDF CEO Françoise Moudouthe also recounts: “In the short period that I have worked at AWDF, I have observed the impact of Innocent’s allyship with our organisation and with feminist movements across Africa.”.

Our deepest condolences go to his wife Josephine and the entire family, as well as his colleagues at the Ford Foundation.

On se souviendra surtout d’Innocent pour sa croyance fervente, non seulement dans le caractère sacré des droits des femmes, mais aussi dans son élan pour le développement en Afrique, mettant ce zèle dans tous les domaines de son travail. Sa profonde compréhension du contexte politique des droits des femmes en Afrique et son véritable intérêt pour le travail ont fait de lui un partenaire inestimable pour d’innombrables organisations de la société civile au Ghana et sur tout le continent.

Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, cofondatrice et membre du Conseil d’Administration de l’AWDF, déclare : “Innocent Chukwuma était tout simplement le meilleur. Avec sa mort soudaine, la société civile africaine a perdu un grand leader, le mouvement féministe a perdu un allié indéfectible et beaucoup d’entre nous ont perdu un cher frère et ami. Innocent savait toujours ce qui était nécessaire et indispensable pour renforcer les mouvements dont nous avons besoin pour le changement social. Il nous manquera énormément”.

Quant à Françoise Moudouthe, PDG de l’AWDF, elle dit : “Durant le peu de temps que j’ai déjà effectué à l’AWDF, j’ai observé l’impact que Innocent a créé en étant un vrai allié avec notre organisation et les mouvements féministes à travers l’Afrique“.

BUILDING TRANSNATIONAL FEMINIST SOLIDARITY

AWDF and Black Women radicals are co-hosting a webinar on Health equity and power: Building transnational feminist solidarity on Thursday, March 25th, 2021, at 4:00–6:00 PM EAT/9:00–11:00 AM EST/1:00-3:00 PM GMT.

The webinar will bring together a diverse panel of speakers, namely; Weema Askri: African Queer Youth Initiative; Dr Ana Mocumbi: Lancet NCDI Poverty Commission; Dr Caldwell L. Kia: University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; Jaimee Swift: Black Women Radicals, Pontso Mafethe: AWDF and moderated by Nana Afua Brantuo: George Washington University.

This ground-breaking conversation will contribute to and deepen the debate on critical constructs that shape inequitable health policies and programmes for African, African descendant women and gender-expansive persons.

The transnational event cuts across structural geopolitical boundaries to showcase similarities in the challenges encompassing activism and the need for solidarity to harness our voices, resources and platforms for equitable women’s health futures.

Through a digitised tribute, the event will draw on current research and analysis of cross-cutting issues like non-communicable diseases and significant barriers to dignity in health-seeking such as poverty, state-driven violence and discrimination.

In addition, the tribute highlights a selection of individual and collective stories of women in Africa and the diaspora whose inspirational past and current initiatives dare to challenge these constructs.

The Health Equity and Feminist Solidarity event will build on existing African feminist power and collective to continue reflection and passion towards transnational identity and solidarity.

Feminist Mental Health Knowledge Series

AWDF invites African women researchers, artists and vloggers to document information, experiences, insights, practices and approaches that promote mental health and emotional wellbeing in communities and groups of women across the continent. We are particularly keen on innovations around feminist collective care and self-care in the digital era, humanitarian, postconflict, rural and urban areas; work or stories that explore how mental health and wellbeing intersect with further marginalisations women face due to their queerness, disability and class status; approaches that work and the role of African women in stirring activism and solidarity for effective mental health and emotional wellbeing programmes and services across communities in Africa.

Feminist Charter Audio-Visual Production

Objective and Scope of Work
AWDF is seeking the services of a multimedia communications and design consultant to translate the African Feminist Charter text format into audio version and produce an interactive visualised digital summary of the Charter. The Charter was developed by the African Feminist Forum Working Group in 2006 and adopted by over 100 African feminists in Accra that year. The charter articulates the African feminist movement’s politics and vision and is currently translated in six languages. The target audience for the final product are African women’s organisations, practitioners and individuals in the women right’s movement.

Grants Administration Consultant

AWDF has launched call for applications for the Leading from the South (LFS) and main grants which closes on 14th April, 2021. We are expecting to receive high volume of applications in response to the call for application that has been put out.

Despite the huge strides that have been made by women’s rights activists in the fight for equality, a lot still remains to be done to close the gender gap. This gap remains because we are not only confronted by deeply entrenched systems of oppressive patriarchy, but also by years of socialising that lead women to not see themselves as equal to men in society.

By Choosing to Challenge, we are celebrating our successes and also challenging ourselves to speak up, to demand more, to set aside gender stereotypes, and create the change that we want.
