AWDF has a vacancy for a French-speaking Intern who will be responsible for providing administrative,  communications, and translation support in French to the AWDF Partnerships and Philanthropy (P&P) Department. The main objective of this department is to establish and nurture partnerships, as well as to engage in, and with the philanthropic ecosystem.

The P&P Intern role is an exciting opportunity for an African feminist who is passionate about gender justice and provides an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in partnerships and philanthropy within a feminist fund, while also developing administrative, communications, and translation skills and promoting language inclusion within the team.

Duration: 6 months

Location: Virtual/Remote, preferably based in a French-speaking African country

At the recent Women Deliver 2023 conference in Kigali, the African Women’s Development Fund resourced the participation of 32 representatives of African feminist and women’s organisations, feminist collectives and individual activists. The African Women’s Development Fund has started implementing our new ten-year (2023-2033) strategic framework, Lemlem, to guide our efforts to advance gender equality and gender justice for girls, women, and gender-diverse people across Africa. At its core, Lemlem focuses on resourcing, nurturing, and strengthening African women, feminist groups, organisations and movements to achieve transformative change. A key strategic priority within Lemlem is to grow and manage AWDF’s financial resources to sustain our ambitions and progress towards financial security. AWDF aims to particularly focus on generating and attracting the type of funding that will give us the flexibility we need to better resource, amplify, and sustain our movement partners – especially long-term, flexible, and unrestricted funding.

To meet this ambition, AWDF is recruiting a consultant (or teams of consultants) to act as a Resource Mobilisation Accelerator – a Resource Mobilisation strategist and expert who can assist the team in ensuring our resource mobilisation strategy, donor relationship management, practices and competencies are aligned with our new strategic vision. The Resource Mobilisation Accelerator’s work will run over a period of six months, and include an accompaniment program for key staff at AWDF around donor relationship management.

We are hiring to fill a vacancy for the position of Programme Officer, Solidarity and Care. To fill this position, we are looking for a highly motivated person who is innovative, passionate about women’s rights in Africa, excited about African feminisms and embraces African women’s rich diversity.

As part of our new strategy, AWDF is building on our approach of strengthening the movement and funded partners to a more transformative and de-colonised approach which gives feminist and women’s rights activists, organisations and collectives in Africa the ownership and space to make transformative choices and impact their communities across the continent.

The Programme Officer is responsible for supporting the implementation of AWDF’s Solidarity and Care strategy to strengthen and uphold African women’s and feminist organisations and movements. The role will work under the leadership of the Programme Specialist – Solidarity and Care. The Solidarity and Care unit follows a cross-cluster operational model and the post-holder will therefore work with and be supported by various clusters, units and teams across the Programmes Department.

If you have experience in contributing to a programme and portfolio of work with identified entities, particularly individual activists in a strategic, inclusive, feminist, trust-based, collaborative and responsive approach for longer-term support, we’d love to hear from you.

Are you an adept storyteller and experienced in report writing?

AWDF seeks the expertise of an Annual Report Writing Consultant with a remarkable storytelling ability to compile, structure, and narrate the organisation’s Annual Report for the fiscal year 2022. The consultant will infuse life into our accomplishments, struggles, and hopes, making the report a captivating testament to the collective efforts of the AWDF community.

The consultant’s responsibilities will include the following:

• Immerse themselves in AWDF’s rich tapestry by reviewing project reports, financial statements, and other relevant materials.
• Embark on a journey of discovery by conducting interviews or meetings with key staff, grantees, and partners, capturing the essence of their experiences.
• Collaborate with AWDF’s Communications and Programme teams, blending data to create a seamless and compelling narrative.
• Craft the report’s structure, ensuring each chapter unfolds like a new chapter in a captivating book.
• Write the report’s content in a way that demonstrates our impact, grounded in human interest stories and lived realities.
  Work with the designer to integrate infographics, charts, and visuals to underscore the impact of our collective journey visually.

End of Project Evaluation Comic Relief’s Shaping Africa’s Futures Project

In January 2021, AWDF received a grant from Comic Relief, an international UK charity organisation under a project titled “African Women Shaping Africa’s Futures“. This grant covers a two-year period and is aimed at supporting Women’s spaces and organisations to effectively engage at the political, legal, economic and social levels to address the challenges confronting women’s rights and gender inequality caused by patriarchal power systems and intersecting systems of discrimination.

Are you a feminist or women’s rights organisation working in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine or Yemen, the Horn of Africa, the Sahel Region, French speaking Africa, or in Portuguese or Arabic speaking country? AWDF is a Pan African organisation and while we recognise the significant needs of women, girls and gender diverse people everywhere we work, for this cycle we are prioritising applications for work in French speaking countries.

Are you a women led organisation that has been formally registered for at least three years (before June 2020)? AWDF defines a woman-led organisation as an organisation whose Board Chair and Chief Executive/Director are both women or non-binary, and where at least 70% of the board and staff members of the organisation are women or non-binary.

If yes, AWDF invites you to submit an application today.

What, When and How?

For this round of grant making, AWDF will award grants for an amount between USD20,000 per year to USD500,000 per year.  We are able to make grants for up to 20 months in this cycle, and you can apply for one of the following three types of grants:

1. Pamoja: you can apply for a maximum of US$500,000 per annum for 20 months
2. Ananse: you can apply for a maximum of US$200,000 per annum for 20 months
3. Yalla: you can apply for a maximum of US$50,000 per annum for up to 20 months

AWDF expects to receive hundreds of applications for funding. In this cycle we anticipate awarding the following number of each type of grant:

• Three (3) Pamoja grants
• Six (6) Ananse grants
• Eleven (11) Yalla grants

You can apply for up to 50% of your verified 2022 income.  For example, if your confirmed income for 2022 was US$600,000 you can apply for a maximum of up to USD300,000 per year for 20 months. If your confirmed income for 2022 was $40,000, you can apply for a maximum of up to $20,000 per year for 20 months. 

The deadline for submitting your applications is 11.59pm GMT on 8^th August 2023.

AWDF will be in solidarity with gender equality and feminist actors attending the conference online and in-person. Our 47-member delegation includes 34 African feminists and women rights actors from 18 countries and 13 staff members.

The Women Deliver Conference is one of the largest multi-sectoral convenings to advance gender equality and brings together grassroots advocates, youth, civil society, governments, multilateral organisations, and the private sector, with a deliberate representation of communities facing systemic discrimination around the world. The 2023 Women Deliver Conference in Kigali is the first to be held on the African continent and an opportunity for AWDF to promote and highlight African feminist voices within the space, centre evidence and define approaches that work to promote and sustain gender equality gains. It will also be an opportunity for AWDF to continue to reintroduce ourselves to our partners and constituents as we launch our new strategic framework and direction for the next ten years.
