Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa (Moremi Initiative) hereby announces its annual call for applications for the 2015 MILEAD [Moremi Initiative Leadership Empowerment and Development] Fellows Program- to identify 25 of Africa’s most outstanding emerging women leaders.

 

The MILEAD Fellows Program is a long-term leadership development program designed to identify, develop and promote emerging young African Women leaders to attain and thrive in leadership in their community and Africa as a whole. The program targets dynamic young women interested in developing transformational leadership skills that help them address issues facing women and girls across communities in Africa. The MILEAD Program equips Fellows with the world class knowledge, skills, values and networks they need to succeed as 21st century women leaders. Applications are invited from young African women between 19 – 25 years of age, living in Africa and the Diaspora.

 

The MILEAD Fellowship will be awarded to 25 outstanding young women who have exhibited leadership potential in their community, organization, and/or profession. To be eligible for the program, an applicant must be African, living on the continent or in the Diaspora; agree to participate in all required activities related to MILEAD – beginning with a three-week residential Summer Institute in Ghana; and commit to a community change project. Specific requirements of the program and related dates are outlined in the application package. Please review program and application guidelines carefully, before completing your application

 

Please note that this one year program is not a full-time fellowship. Selected candidates may remain full time students or work full time for the program duration, except during the 3–week summer institute. The 3-week summer institute is an intensive and full-time residential program and all fellows will be required to attend. The rest of the program involves community-based, online and other distance activities.

Pour les jeunes dirigeantes africaines

L’Initiative Moremi pour le leadership des femmes en Afrique (Moremi Initiative) lance son appel annuel à candidature pour 2015-MILEAD [Moremi Initiative Leadership Empowerment et le développement] Fellows Program- pour identifier les 25 plus remarquables femmes leaders émergentes en Afrique.

 

Le Programme de bourses MILEAD est un programme de développement du leadership à long terme visant à identifier, développer et promouvoir des jeunes femmes leaders africaines pour atteindre et prospérer dans le leadership dans leur communauté et en Afrique plus largement. Le programme cible les jeunes femmes dynamiques intéressées à développer des compétences de leadership transformationnel qui les aident à résoudre les problèmes auxquels sont confrontées les femmes et les filles à travers les communautés en Afrique. Le Programme MILEAD fournit aux boursières des connaissances internationales, les compétences, les valeurs et les réseaux dont elles ont besoin pour réussir en tant femmes leaders du 21ème siècle. Les demandes sont réservées aux jeunes femmes africaines de 19 – 25 ans, d’Afrique et de la diaspora.

 

La bourse MILEAD sera décernée à 25 jeunes femmes exceptionnelles qui ont démontré leur potentiel en matière de leadership dans leur communauté, organisation et / ou profession. Pour être admissible au programme, la candidate doit être africaine, vivre sur le continent ou faire partie de la diaspora; accepter de participer à toutes les activités nécessaires liées à MILEAD – en commençant par une résidence de trois semaines en Institut au Ghana; et s’engager dans un projet de changement communautaire. Les exigences spécifiques du programme et les dates connexes sont décrites dans la fiche de demande. S’il vous plaît examinez le programme et les directives de candidature attentivement avant de remplir votre demande.

 

Veuillez noter que ce programme d’un an n’est pas une bourse à temps plein. Les candidates sélectionnées peuvent rester étudiantes ou travailler à temps plein pour la durée du programme, sauf pendant l’institut d’été de 3 semaines. L’institut d’été de 3 semaines est un programme résidentiel à temps plein et intensif et tous les boursiers sont tenus d’y assister. Le reste du programme comprend d’autres activités dans les communautés, en ligne et à distance.

(Most successful candidates will likely not to have access to any financial support, or meet the eligibility criteria for the AWDF’s main funding programme.) The Small Grants Programme also supports emergency issues, such as community disasters, or activities that require a rapid response.

This programme currently operates only in Ghana, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.

[tp lang=”en” not_in=”fr”]AWDF Francophone Programme Officer Rissi Assani-Alabi’s invitation to a cocktail reception on International Women’s Day held at Fiesta Royale hotel, gave no indication of what was in store for her.

Rissi has been with the African Women’s Development Fund for almost 12 years and has extensive experience in grant making, working with NGO’s, movement building and women’s organizations in French-speaking Africa.

“Margaret Cesay, who organized the event, is an activist who has a passion to promote women’s empowerment and is committed to celebrating their achievements,” Rissi said. “I just thought it was an ordinary evening outing.”

When Veronica Sackey, headmistress of Dzorwulu Special School, who has been teaching children with intellectual disability for close to 36 years, was presented with an award for her contribution to society, Rissi was moved.

“ I thought wow, these are some special women,” she said.

But to her surprise, Rissi herself was called up and given a medal of honor for her contribution to women’s empowerment.[/tp]

[tp lang=”fr” not_in=”en”]L’invitation de Rissi Assani-Alabi, Chargée de Programme francophone à AWDF, à un cocktail sur la Journée internationale des femmes tenu à l’hôtel Fiesta Royal, ne donnait aucune indication sur ce qui allait lui être réservé.

Rissi a déjà œuvré au Fonds Africain de développement de la Femme pendant près de 12 ans et possède une vaste expérience dans l’octroi de subventions, en collaboration avec les ONG, le renforcement des mouvements et des organisations de femmes en Afrique francophone.

“Margaret Cesay, qui a organisé l’événement, est une militante qui a une passion pour la promotion de l’autonomisation des femmes et est déterminée à célébrer leurs réalisations”, a déclaré Rissi. “Je pensais juste que ce serait une sortie ordinaire.”

Lorsque Veronica Sackey, directrice de l’Ecole Spéciale Dzorwulu, qui enseigne aux enfants ayant une déficience intellectuelle depuis près de 36 années, s’est vu remettre un prix pour sa contribution à la société, Rissi a été émue.

«Je pensais wow, ce sont des femmes spéciales,” dit-elle.

Mais à sa grande surprise, Rissi elle même a été appelée et a reçu une médaille d’honneur pour sa contribution à l’autonomisation des femmes.[/tp]

 

[tp lang=”en” not_in=”fr”]“I feel very humbled that my little efforts have been acknowledged because I believe there are so many other women in Africa, Ghana, Benin…who are doing work in their own little spaces to ensure that women live in a world where there is peace, security and social justice, but their efforts are not recognized or they are not even visible,” Rissi said.

Rissi is passionate about women’s rights and leadership issues and has spent a substantial part of her life promoting women’s rights and social justice.

“This is a commendation of AWDF also,” she said, “because it’s through them that I l got my visibility and through them that I learned to speak out for women. And I am grateful for that.”

According to Fiesta Royale, the event is part of its corporate social responsibility to support and motivate women’s achievements in Ghana.

We at AWDF are thrilled about this recognition and say a big congratulations and thank you to Rissi for her dedication over the years.

Rissi est passionnée par les droits des femmes et les questions de leadership et a passé une partie importante de sa vie à promouvoir les droits des femmes et la justice sociale.

“Ceci est un éloge d’AWDF aussi,” dit-elle, “parce c’est grâce à eux que j’ai eu de la visibilité et à travers eux que j’ai appris à parler pour les femmes. Et je leur suis reconnaissante pour cela. ”

Selon Fiesta Royal, l’événement fait partie de ses responsabilités sociales d’entreprise pour soutenir et motiver les réalisations des femmes au Ghana.

Nous à AWDF sommes ravis de cette reconnaissance et disons un grand bravo et merci à Rissi pour son dévouement au fil des ans.

[tp lang=”en” not_in=”fr”]Breast Care International (BCI), an NGO dedicated to the establishment of breast cancer awareness centres throughout the country, organized a campaign in Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo Region, just two days before International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8th. The program, which was dubbed Independence Day, was sponsored by the African Women’s Development (AWDF) and assisted by Peace And Love Hospitals.

Addressing attendees who came from Nkoranza and the surrounding towns, Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of BCI and C.E.O of Peace and Love Hospitals described the devastating effects of breast cancer on the nation and the world at large. Like many of their counterparts in Africa, Ghanaian women are slow to seek care for breast health issues due to superstition, lack of understanding about the disease’s early symptoms and reluctance and fear, Dr. Addai said. A number of women hope for a self-cure or simply just entrust it to divine intervention, she added.

Various forms of diagnoses of the disease and the techniques of breast self-examination were explained with strong encouragement for women to undertake monthly self examinations. Dr. Addai encouraged women to seek expert medical care if they detect anything abnormal with their breasts as prompt as possible. Her message was followed by a session of clinical breast screening, which saw the participation a substantial number of women.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Nkoranza and the Paramount chief, Nana Kudom Agyemang praised BCI and Peace and Love Hospitals for instituting grassroots education and breast screenings to create and sustain awareness about breast cancer in rural and urban communities, whilst promoting early detection and prompt treatment.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide. It is also the principal cause of death from cancer among women. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one woman dies from the disease every 69 seconds somewhere around the world resulting in more than 1,300,000 deaths globally.

[tp lang=”fr” not_in=”en”]Breast Care International (BCI), une ONG dédiée à la création de centres de sensibilisation au cancer du sein dans tout le pays, a organisé une campagne à Nkoranza dans la région de Brong Ahafo, juste deux jours avant la Journée internationale de la femme célébrée le 8 Mars. Le programme, qui a été surnommé Jour de l’Indépendance, a été parrainé par le Fonds Africain de Développement de la Femme (AWDF) et assisté par Peace And Love Hospitals.

En abordant les participants venus de Nkoranza et des villes environnantes, Beatrice Wiafe Addai, présidente de BCI et PDG de Peace And Love Hospitals décrit les effets dévastateurs du cancer du sein sur la nation et le monde en général. “Comme beaucoup de leurs homologues en Afrique, les femmes ghanéennes sont lentes à se faire soigner pour des problèmes de santé du sein en raison de la superstition, du manque de compréhension des symptômes précoces et de la réticence et la peur de la maladie”, confie le Dr Addai. “Un certain nombre de femmes ont l’espoir d’un auto-traitement ou tout simplement de confier leur maladie à une intervention divine”, a-t-elle ajouté.

Diverses formes de diagnostics de la maladie et les techniques de l’auto-examen ont été expliquées avec une forte incitation pour les femmes à entreprendre des examens mensuels indépendants. Dr Addai a encouragé les femmes à chercher des soins médicaux spécialisés si elles détectent quelque chose d’anormal avec leurs seins aussi rapidement que possible. Son message a été suivi d’une séance de dépistage clinique du sein, qui a vu la participation d’un nombre important de femmes.

Le chef exécutif municipal de Nkoranza et Chef Suprême, Nana KuDom Agyemang a loué BCI et Peace And Love Hospitals d’avoir institué une éducation populaire et des projection sur le sein pour créer et maintenir la sensibilisation au cancer du sein dans les communautés rurales et urbaines, tout en favorisant la détection précoce et un traitement rapide.

Le cancer du sein est le cancer le plus fréquent chez les femmes à travers le monde. Il est également la principale cause de décès par cancer chez les femmes. Selon l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS), une femme meurt de la maladie toutes les 69 secondes, quelque part dans le monde ce qui fait plus de 1,3 millions de décès à l’échelle mondiale.

She works to resource African Women’s networks, organisations and groups with capacity, financial and technical support to enable them undertake innovative interventions to promote the rights of women across the African Region and also supports strategy development to inform AWDF’s programmatic activities.

Rose has worked in different capacities for the last 17 years as an Environment, Gender and Livelihood Expert for various national level organisations.

Having worked with diverse groups including women, young women, marginalised communities, institutions, networks and donors, she has gained deep insight, experience and understanding of development issues and programming as well as implementation across various thematic areas.

Rose is currently a PhD Candidate at the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies, University of Ghana, researching into climate change adaptation and the wellbeing of rural women farmers. She also holds an MSc. in Environmental Resources Management and a BSc. in Renewable Natural Resource Management all from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Rose has also served as a Strategic Advisor to the Global Fund for Women since 2017.

Rose is very passionate about issues of environment, gender and livelihoods. For her, gender and other factors intersect to influence women’s vulnerability and capacity to respond to climate change Impact.
