Staff at AWDF hear about issues as they are developing, and can take action to support responses- from women’s activism to end the war in Liberia to new work around women in the culture industries. The African Feminist Forum has been hosted by AWDF- a historic platform that has contributed directly to building stronger solidarity between activists on the continent including around the rise of religious fundamentalisms and oppressive laws around sexuality. [tp lang=”en” not_in=”fr”]The Gbowee Peace Foundation, founded by Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee, continues with its support of female-led civil society associations and youth groups undertaking Ebola prevention education.

Its activity has been focused in settlements in Montserrado and six other counties in Liberia. The communities include Bomi, Margibi, Grand Bassa, Nimba, Bong, and Lofa Counties.

The group’s goal is to mount media campaigns in the sixteen local languages, provide hygiene materials to hotspot communities and households under quarantine. GPFA also trains community women to undertake contact tracing of Ebola patients as well as wellness validation surveys in targeted outbreak hotspots.

This latest project started in December 2014 and is expected to run until the end of May 2015.

[tp lang=”fr” not_in=”en”]La Fondation Gbowee pour la paix, fondée par Leymah Gbowee, Nobel de la paix, poursuit son soutien à des associations de la société civile dirigées par des femmes et des groupes de jeunes qui entreprennent une éducation et la prévention à Ebola.

Son activité a été concentrée dans les colonies de Montserrado et six autres comtés du Libéria. Les communautés comprennent Bomi, Margibi, Grand Bassa, Nimba, Bong, et de Lofa.

Ce dernier projet a commencé en Décembre 2014 et devrait se poursuivre jusqu’à la fin du mois de mai à 2015.

As the region sees the world’s worst ever Ebola outbreak slow down and near an end, the focus is on rebuilding lives and communities and addressing the issues of healthcare systems in shambles, low levels of literacy and the economic downturn.

Here at AWDF of course we pay special attention to how women’s lives have been impacted and what can be done to ensure preparedness for any future catastrophic events or emergencies. We will share insights, reports and highlight work being undertaken by our grantees.

Arielle Enninful is the Chief Operations Officer of General Trust Company Limited (GENTRUST). Prior to joining GENTRUST, she worked with Ecobank Ghana Limited (Ecobank). She has over twelve years of work experience in the financial services industry.

Mrs. Enninful has held several leadership roles in her career. She set an industry standard by brokering the first finance lease deal by a local bank, for 100 taxis in partnership with an insurance company and an automobile dealership. During this period she was elected the first female Vice President for Ghana Association of Leasing Companies (GALCO). Mrs. Enninful also spent time at US Bank Nebraska prior to joining Ecobank.

Mrs. Enninful holds a Masters in Business Administration from Bellevue University, Nebraska, USA, a Bachelor Degree in English with Linguistics from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Diploma in Public Relations from the London School of Public Relations. She is married with two sons.

[tp lang=”en” not_in=”fr”] Wandia is a feminist Pan-Africanist with over 16 years of experience working with regional, international and civil society organizations on women’s and girls’ rights, grant making and management, regional integration and governance. She currently manages the Global End FGM at Equality Now. Prior, she was the Regional Program Officer for the Open Society Foundation’s Africa Regional Office. She also worked as the Pan African Gender Justice Lead for Oxfam Great Britain’s Pan Africa Program; Regional Women’s Rights Coordinator-Africa for ActionAid International; and an Advocacy Officer for the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET). Mary holds a Bachelor of Education from Kenyatta University and a Masters of Arts in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.

Mary is dedicated to ensuring that women and girls enjoy their human rights. She believes good laws not only condemn perpetrators of gender discrimination and violence, but also provide protection against human rights violations. Her favorite quote is by Archbishop Desmond Tutu: “If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

Mary’s shero is award-winning writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adhichie, who said, “Culture does not make people. People make culture. If it is true that the full humanity of women is not our culture, then we can and must make it our culture.”
Outside of the office, Mary enjoys book clubs, coaching, traveling, music, and volunteering her skills and expertise to advance women’s and girls’ rights.

She is a Leadership Trainer, Certified Coach and facilitator strengthening the leadership competencies of managers and supervisors in the private sector, civil society and public sector. Taaka also has extensive experience in Organisational Development and Social Development. She was the Country Director for ActionAid International Ghana from 2003 to 2007 and has over 20 years’ experience working on organisational and governance issues in East, West and Southern Africa.

Taaka has a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from Harvard University, Boston MA, and a Juris Doctorate in Law from Columbia University, New York. She also has a Certificate in Organisational Development from the Organisation Development Centre & the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, United States and an Advanced Certificate in Coaching from the International Coaching Academy, Melbourne, Australia. She is a member of the International Coaching Federation

She is Principal Partner, Amandla Consulting, specializing in leadership development for women, and she runs an online community for women called Abovewhispers.com. She is a UN Women Nigeria Advisor. She served as the Director of Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA), an international development organisation for African women based in London, UK, from 1991-2001. During her time at AMwA, she started the African Women’s Leadership Institute which has supported over 6,000 women leaders in Africa over the past twenty years. She is one of the three Co-Founders of the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) and served as the first Executive Director from 2001-2010.

Her leadership established AWDF as a leading institution in the area of social change philanthropy in Africa, and as one of the most effective feminist philanthropic institutions globally. She is also one of the founders of the African Feminist Forum (AFF) and served on the AFF Working Group from 2006-2016.She is the recipient of the 2011 David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of philanthropy, given by the Synergos Institute, New York. In June 2011, the New African Magazine named Bisi as one of the 100 Most Influential People of Africa.[/tp]

While lecturing as an Associate Professor at Makerere University, she founded Action for Development, an NGO working to empower women and influence legislation and policy for gender equality in Uganda. She also founded the Mentoring and Empowerment Programme for young Women (MEMPROW), a programme for developing young women’s leadership and promoting their rights within learning institutions in Uganda. Hilda Tadria est l’un des membres fondateurs de l’AWDF. Elle est chercheur expérimentée et consultante ayant une formation en gestion institutionnelle et en la recherche basée sur le développement social.

Alors qu’elle enseignait comme professeure agrégée à l’Université Makerere, elle a fondé “Action for Development”, une ONG qui œuvre pour l’autonomisation des femmes et qui influence la législation et la politique en faveur de l’égalité des sexes en Ouganda. Elle a également fondé le Programme de mentorat et d’autonomisation des jeunes femmes (MEMPROW), un programme visant à développer le leadership des jeunes femmes et à promouvoir leurs droits dans les établissements d’enseignement en Ouganda.[/tp]

[tp lang=”fr” not_in=”en”]We are proud to announce that Comfort Mussa, one of the participants in AWDF’s Women Writers Workshop held in July last year, made the shortlist of Women Deliver’s selected journalists.

Each year, Women Deliver, a leading, global advocate for girls’ and women’s health, rights, and wellbeing, celebrates International Women’s Day by honoring people, organizations and innovations that are delivering for girls and women. This year, they are celebrating 15 journalists from around the world who are advocating for and advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights. Honorees were selected by an internal review board from a competitive pool of more than 100 journalists who were nominated by dozens of Women Deliver’s partners and supporters.

Says Women Deliver: “Comfort uses her voice to make others’ voices even louder. She is a radio host, blogger and multi-award winning journalist with a keen eye for stories that expose social injustice. As a reporter for the Global Press Journal, Comfort writes about many sensitive topics including the risk of sexual harassment for mentally disabled women in Cameroonand the ripple effect of anti-child labor laws on middle class women. Chaque année, Women Deliver, chef de file, défenseur mondial pour les filles et la santé des femmes, les droits et le bien-être, célèbre la Journée internationale de la femme en rendant hommage à des personnes, des organisations et des innovations qui comptent pour les filles et les femmes. [tp lang=”en” not_in=”fr”]AWDF’s Next Chief Executive Officer’s Forum will be held from 25-27 March 2015 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The three-day programme organized by AWDF’s Capacity Building unit, is designed to support participants’ personal and organizational development.

This year’s forum will be attended by 20 top and middle-level managers from five African countries. They will receive coaching under a new, expanded coaching and mentorship project on Leadership and Governance, aimed at strengthening the capacity and governance frameworks of women’s organisations across the continent. Board members of the various organizations would also be joining in the forum, making a total of 35 female executives expected to benefit from the convening.

The CEO Forum forms part of AWDF’s commitment to strengthening the leadership of women’s organisations in Africa. It provides a safe space for the leadership of women’s organisations to discuss strategic leadership issues, offer hands-on coaching, sharing and reflection time, and an opportunity to network.

AWDF’s CEO forum is designed specifically to foster a safe and enabling creative environment, imbued with feminist values, for the renewal of participants’ energy and spirit.

[tp lang=”fr” not_in=”en”]Le prochain Forum des Chefs de Direction s’AWDF se tiendra du 25 au 27 Mars 2015 à Nairobi, au Kenya.

Le programme de trois jours organisé par l’unité de renforcement des capacités d’AWDF, est conçu pour soutenir le développement personnel et organisationnel des participants.

Le forum de cette année sera suivi par 20 gestionnaires de cinq pays africains de haut et de niveau intermédiaire . Ils recevront une formation sous une forme nouvelle: du coaching et un projet de mentorat élargi, le leadership et la gouvernance, visant à renforcer les cadres des capacités des organisations de femmes et de la gouvernance à travers le continent. Les membres du conseil d’administration de diverses organisations se joindraient au forum, soit un total de 35 femmes cadres qui devraient profiter de la convocation.

Le Forum des CD fait partie de l’engagement d’AWDF de conforter le leadership des organisations de femmes en Afrique. Il offre un espace sûr pour les dirigeants des organisations de femmes pour discuter des questions de leadership stratégique, offrir des pratiques de coaching, le partage, le temps de la réflexion, et une occasion de faire du réseautage.

Le Forum des CD d’AWDF est spécifiquement conçu pour favoriser un environnement créatif sûr et favorable, imprégné de valeurs féministes, pour le renouvellement de l’énergie et de l’esprit des participants.
