Flagship Programmes
The context in which we exist, historic and recent global events, and our 22+ years of experience working with and for African women’s rights organisations have shaped the strategic priorities that will guide our efforts over the next 10 years. Some of these priorities have guided our work since inception, and have been refined and defined through an iterative process over the course of two decades. Others have become more apparent in recent years, as global and regional events – including the COVID-19 pandemic – have exposed several major fallacies and challenges that will require ongoing, intersectional systems-change to overcome. We are aware that we won’t be able to solve them on our own, and need to walk closely alongside our partners on this journey.
Leading from the South (LFS)
Leading from the South (LFS) is a feminist global South-led consortium conceptualised and managed by four leading women’s funds: African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), Fondo de Mujeres del Sur (FMS), International Indigenous Women’s Forum (FIMI) / AYNI Fund (AYNI), and Women’s Fund Asia (WFA).
Ford Foundation, OSIWA and AWDF Launch New Fund to End Sexual Violence in West Africa
Ford Foundation West Africa Office, Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA) and the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) are joining forces to address and reduce sexual violence, and its deep-rooted drivers, across West Africa. The initiative, KASA! Ending Sexual Violence in West Africa, will leverage the growing focus on sexual violence in the region and boost feminist action and advocacy to reduce it.
Tahwil Komboa Reziste Consortium
Inspired by African feminist values of sisterhood, solidarity and mutual aid, the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), Initiative Sankofa d’Afrique de l’Ouest (ISDAO), Purposeful, Doria Feminist Fund, and Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), have joined forces and resources to create Komboa (“Liberate” in Swahili) a feminist consortium that supports communities threatened by the rise of anti-rights and anti-gender movements
