African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) is an organisation dedicated to accelerating agricultural gains across Sub-Saharan Africa by investing in the scientific and leadership skills of Africa’s leading women agricultural scientists. AWARD is cultivating a growing pool of African women to be (a) effective within ARD institutions supporting the agricultural value chain; (b) effective across a range of research disciplines serving the sector; (c) responsive to gender issues in the service of women, without excluding men; and (d) technically competent to generate innovations needed by rural smallholders, most of whom are women.
Job Summary
The Deputy Director, will work closely with the Director on major initiatives that raise AWARD’s regional and global profile as a leader in the Gender Responsive Agriculture Agenda. The incumbent will oversee AWARD’s Monitoring, Learning & Evaluation, Communications, and Data Analysis units, ensuring that they support the program (both internally and externally) in building an expertly informed focus on gender responsive agriculture for Africa. The ideal candidate will be a compelling leader, able to translate data on gender and agriculture into compelling narratives and action points, and share these in a variety of formats with key players in global agriculture arena.
Skills and Qualifications
This is an internationally recruited post, based in ICRAF in Nairobi, which is open to men and women of all nationalities. You should have:
- A Masters or PhD in agricultural research or social science, with a particular focus on gender and gender-responsive research.
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience working in gender-responsive agricultural research and development, with international experience in Western and Southern Africa being particularly advantageous.
- A proven track record of communicating program results to a variety of audiences, with skills in monitoring and evaluation, knowledge management, communication, and/or public relations.
- Excellent leadership, supervisory, planning and organization skills.
- Creative, conceptual and analytical thinker with strong analytical skills, expertise in handling both quantitative and qualitative data.
- Effective communication, presentation and problem handling skills.
- Must be “digitally savvy” with demonstrated affinity for social media, electronic data management systems, and/or other online tools.
- Team-building skills with a collaborative management style.
- Ability to forge and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of representatives of AWARD’s diverse stakeholders.

Background
The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), an Africa wide women’s rights grant making foundation based in Accra, Ghana requires the services of a Communications and Fundraising Specialist who will work within the Office of the Chief Executive Officer.
Job Summary
The post holder will be responsible for managing the diverse communications needs of the organization, working closely with the CEO and other members of the fundraising and communications team. Knowledge of managing websites, social media tools, microsoft office, good writing skills, strong communications experience and events organising are essential. The ability to speak and write French will be an advantage.

Specific Duties:
- To provide strategic oversight, develop and manage AWDF’s diverse communication needs
- To strengthen and implement AWDF’s communications strategy, including in the following ways:
- compile regular newsletters, grantee stories and updates for the AWDF and African Feminist Forum(AFF) websites, associated social media channels and other communications outlets as identified
- be proactive, prompt and timely in communicating briefs on emerging issues involving women and girls on the continent
- conduct and write up various interviews, including of African women leaders and AWDF’s grantee partners
- update specific social media tools.
- organise a range of outreach events
- write and produce publications, reports, press releases, statements and flyers for diverse constituencies
- be proactive in identifying new communications opportunities for AWDF, its staff, its grantees and networks
- To develop and manage AWDF’s communications databases with contacts and details of AWDF’s key stakeholders.
- lead on the organisation of key events in the AWDF calendar including International Women’s Day celebrations and the organisation of the African Women in Film Forum
- To lead on programmatic communications activities as part of AWDF’s non grant making activities and to provide advice, guidance and ideas regarding communications in AWDF’s thematic grantmaking areas
- To provide fundraising communications support as well as report/proposal writing to donors and other stakeholders
- To provide special communications support to the Office of the CEO and to Special Programmes, including in building AWDF’s portfolio of individual donors
- To support the communication needs and training of AWDF staff and grantee partners
- To act as the key contact person to the media
- To build communication partnerships and key media alliances
- To collect and prepare stories capturing the impact of AWDF’s work and our grantee partners
- Analyse the impact of AWDF’s communications activities
- Any other reasonable duties assigned
Essential Knowledge and Experience:
- Education to graduate degree level
- Experience of managing communications programmes and activities in a range of settings, but particularly in media, civil society or social justice organisations
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral)
- Excellent IT skills
- Excellent organisational and planning skills
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to work democratically and effectively with diverse groups and people.
- Ability to work to work to tight deadlines.
- Strong commitment to social justice, women’s rights and social change
Qualifications
- University degree in the social sciences, preferably in Communications, Marketing, Business Administration, or other related discipline.
- Working knowledge of French will be an advantage, as will experience in fundraising and resource mobilization.

Background
The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is a grant making foundation, which aims to support the work of the African women’s movement for peace, equality, sustainable development and social justice. AWDF, which is based in Accra, Ghana. AWDF requires the services of an experienced, innovative and dedicated Programmes Specialist, Knowledge Management, to support the senior management team in the development and implementation of an organisational knowledge management strategy.
Job Specification
As a learning organisation, the generation of knowledge, its management and dissemination is critical to the work of AWDF. Knowledge produced in various forms within AWDF is important to the organisation’s mandate to raise the profile and visibility of African women, the African Women’s Movement, the organisation itself and most importantly, the issues it seeks to address.AWDF also disseminates knowledge to showcase the work of its grantees, to raise awareness of the issues they seek to address, to influence decision-making in Africa and internationally and to mobilise greater public support for women’s rights in Africa. In addition, it generates and disseminates information, knowledge and learning to strengthen grantee organisational effectiveness.
The post holder will be responsible for coordinating AWDF’s knowledge management function, ensuring a sound evidence base of the impact of AWDF’s work, as well as the ability to showcase this work and the issues the organisation seeks to address, to broad publics both internal and external to AWDF.
The post holder will have primary responsibility for:
- Commissioning, Repackaging and Disseminating of research in AWDF’s key areas of work:
- Ensuring AWDF is kept abreast of external research, studies and trends that will impact on AWDF’s key areas of work.
- Coordinating specified AWDF commissioned research
- Developing tools to enhance knowledge management within AWDF
- Working closely with the Communications team to disseminate key information and education about AWDF’s work.
- Ensuring Quality Standards of AWDF’s Knowledge Production
- Coordinating the compilation of AWDF’s key publications
- Ensuring that publications such as reports and other publications are produced in line with AWDF’s publications and reporting guidelines.
- Ensuring that all AWDF commissioned research and documentation is produced in line with AWDF publications and reporting guidelines.
- Ensuring a Sound Evidence Base of AWDF’s Impact
- Working with the M&E Specialist to produce periodic qualitative and quantitive reports of AWDF’s work and achievements
- Compiling or coordinating compelling narratives of the achievements of AWDF’s constituents for advocacy, awareness raising and public mobilisation.
- Development of dissemination strategies for this work
- Supporting senior management and AWDF colleagues with high quality, well written, accurate and specific information to achieve AWDF’s mandate
- Developing and managing a database of AWDF’s key partners and stakeholders.
- Ensuring Knowledge Production as a Learning Tool
- Coordinating the production or collation of good practice guidelines, tools and practice
- Providing regular internal briefs to AWDF staff team
- Developing advocacy materials, policy and legislative briefs on key aspects of AWDF’s work
- Representing AWDF at key meetings and convenings with a view to demonstrate AWDF effectiveness and value added from a sound evidence base.
- Managing AWDF’s Resource Centre
- Working with the team to update the electronic and physical library as well as oversee the use of this resource).
- Providing guidance to the management team on key research, documentation, studies and writing for purchase to house in the resource centre

Person Specification
- At least a second degree in social sciences or related field with at least seven years relevant experience, including significant experience of working in the field of women’s rights organising in Africa.
- Strong analytical, writing and communication skills.
- Strong IT skills especially in the areas of database development and management
- Demonstrable commitment to women’s rights and social justice.
- A productive self starter who can develop and put in place innovative information ideas
- Demonstrable ability to liaise with a broad range of people
- Ability to absorb high volumes of information and documentation and to break down difficult and complicated concepts.
- Ability to track multiple activities assist and collaborate with other staff and respond to direction and requests
- Ability to work on one’s own with minimum supervision.
- Experience working with an international organisation (preferred)
- Working knowledge of French preferred.
- Experience of engaging in social science research is desirable
- Ability and willingness to travel internationally
