The Ebola crisis in West Africa has generated a great deal of discussion and debate recently. However there has been little focus on the response of the pan-continental organisation, African Union (AU), to the situation from an institutional and normative perspective. The speaker shares insights on the approaches and mechanisms that have been deployed by the AU in an attempt to manage the Ebola crisis as well as its regional implications amidst the complex challenges facing the African continent.

Semiha Abdulmelik is an AWDF sponsored fellow of the Peace and Security Fellowship for African Women at the African Leadership Centre. Semiha has worked for local and international NGOs, as well as the UN, with a focus on governance, civil society, and human rights programming in Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia as well as policy and advocacy in the area of humanitarian affairs, conflict, and post-conflict reconstruction at the African Union level. Semiha has published an article on ‘’The African Women’s Movement and Pan-Africanism: Two Ships Passing Silently in the Night?’’ in the African Women’s Journal as part of the O/AU Jubilee celebrations.

La crise d’Ébola en Afrique de l’Ouest a généré beaucoup de discussions et de débats récemment. Cependant, il y a eu peu de lumière sur la réponse à la situation de l’organisation pan-continentale, l’Union africaine (UA), du point de vue institutionnel et normatif. les intervenants ont partagé en interne des idées sur les approches et les mécanismes qui ont été déployés par l’UA pour tenter de gérer la crise Ebola ainsi que ses implications régionales au milieu des défis complexes auxquels le continent africain doit déjà faire face.

Semiha Abdulmelik est un membre de la Bourse de paix et de sécurité pour les femmes africaines à l’African Leadership Centre soutenue par AWDF. Semiha a travaillé pour des ONG locales et internationales, ainsi que l’ONU, avec un accent sur la gouvernance, la société civile, et la programmation des droits de l’homme au Soudan, au Sud-Soudan et en Ethiopie, mais aussi en politique et sur le plaidoyer dans le domaine des affaires humanitaires, les conflits et la reconstruction post-conflit au niveau de l’Union africaine. Semiha a publié un article sur ” Le mouvement des femmes africaines et le panafricanisme: Deux navires passant silencieusement dans la nuit ” dans le Journal des femmes africaines dans le cadre des célébrations du jubilé de l’UA / O.
