{"id":9370,"date":"2018-06-29T11:19:46","date_gmt":"2018-06-29T11:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/africlub.net\/awdf\/?p=9370"},"modified":"2021-03-19T16:07:41","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T16:07:41","slug":"call-for-proposals-16-days-against-gender-based-violence-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/call-for-proposals-16-days-against-gender-based-violence-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"CALL FOR PROPOSALS: 16 DAYS AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"Since its founding by women\u2019s rights activists in 1991, the 16 Days of Activism Campaign has been used as an organising strategy by individuals, groups and women\u2019s rights organisations around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of violence against women. Ending violence against women has been at the centre of the African Women\u2019s Development Fund (AWDF)\u2019s work for several years.\u00a0 As part of AWDF\u2019s support to the cause to eliminate VAW, AWDF supports the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign by awarding grants to women\u2019s organisations in Africa to organise and coordinate activities around the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

AWDF is therefore putting out a call for proposals for activities to mark 16 Days of Activism Against\u00a0Gender Based Violence in 2018. In 2018, AWDF will fund small sized women\u2019s rights organisations on the African continent to lend their voice to the campaign as well as participate in activities that will raise awareness and mobilise action around ending all forms of violence against women and girls in universities and other tertiary institutions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in educational contexts is an issue of great concern. It is a violation in its own right, and also has great repercussions for the well-being and future of women and girls.\u00a0 Many girls and young women are subjected to gender-based violence in or around the places where they study and seek education.\u00a0 These violations occur in different ways including rape, physical violence, stalking, sexual harassment, coerced sex-for-grades and emotional abuse.\u00a0 This is a violation of their human rights, and a form of gender-discrimination that has far-reaching physical, psychological and educational consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Until gender-based violence is eliminated in and around universities and other tertiary institutions across Africa, many of the ambitious targets set by the global community through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to provide safe and supportive learning environments, to end violence against girls and young women in all settings and to achieve gender equality, will not be realised.<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of efforts to eliminate gender-based violence and to help achieve the SDGs, AWDF as part of activities to commemorate the 2018 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence seeks to support women\u2019s rights organisations employing innovative approaches, methodologies, tools and resources that show positive results in preventing and responding to violence against women within tertiary institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

AWDF will prioritise applications from initiatives led by women students themselves and\/or women\u2019s rights organisations working closely with women\u2019s student groups and movements in educational institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n
