{"id":7256,"date":"2016-01-28T16:19:26","date_gmt":"2016-01-28T16:19:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/africlub.net\/awdf\/?p=7256"},"modified":"2016-01-28T21:11:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-28T21:11:38","slug":"womens-rights-activists-protest-sierra-leone-safe-abortion-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/womens-rights-activists-protest-sierra-leone-safe-abortion-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Women&#8217;s Rights Activists Protest Sierra Leone Safe Abortion Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>By Moiyattu Banya<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A group of over 50 Sierra Leonean women have marched on the nation\u2019s parliament house to affirm their support for a Safe Abortion Bill passed last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7258\" src=\"http:\/\/africlub.net\/awdf\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-2-450x338.jpg\" alt=\"image1 (2)\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-2-450x338.jpg 450w, https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/wp-content\/uploads\/image1-2.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authorities prevented the women from invading a meeting convened by Christian and Muslim leaders on Wednesday to discuss the bill which was brought before parliament in December 2015, but \u00a0is yet to be signed into law by the president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill would legalize abortion for women and girls with pregnancies of up to 12 weeks and even after 13 weeks under special circumstances which include sexual assault, rape, incest or medical complications which might put the life of a mother or child at risk. \u00a0Legislators have worked closely with women\u2019s activist organizations and key stakeholders to debate the benefits of the bill for women as well as the healthcare system in Sierra Leone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7260\" src=\"http:\/\/africlub.net\/awdf\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-1-450x253.jpg\" alt=\"image2 (1)\" width=\"450\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-1-450x253.jpg 450w, https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-1.jpg 1328w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women, who were from a coalition of different women\u2019s rights groups, have championed the bill as a victory for reproductive rights \u00a0saying it would reduce illegal and unsafe abortions. Sierra Leone has the world\u2019s highest maternal mortality rates in the world according to the World Health Organization, with a high proportion of deaths resulting \u00a0from unsafe abortions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is not a fight against morality or religion,\u201d Jayne Flynn-Sankoh, an activist said. &#8220;It(the bill) is a pathway to the independence of women &#8230;the Bill seeks to protect the sexual and reproductive health rights of women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are not saying that we don&#8217;t want to have babies, we are saying let us make a decision.We need to protect our women and girls who are getting pregnant through rape, incest or have a medical condition that may put her life or the fetus in danger.
