 <\/p>\nAWDF \u00a0selects\u00a0<\/strong>22 African Women For Its African Women Writers \u00a0Workshop In Kampala, Uganda, \u00a0July 27-August 5, 2015<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The African Women\u2019s Development Fund (AWDF) is pleased to announce the selection of 22 African female writers for its second creative non-fiction writers workshop on social justice to be held in Kampala, Uganda, from July 27-August 5, 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n

The candidates were chosen by a competitive process from over 200 applications that poured in after the call was announced in April this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop is being organized in collaboration with the Uganda Women Writers Association (FEMRITE), an NGO which promotes the development of creative writing in Africa through workshops and courses.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lead facilitators this \u00a0year are veteran BBC journalist Elizabeth Ohene from Ghana and award winning writer Yewande Omotoso (Nigeria, Barbados South Africa)**.<\/span><\/p>\n

A novel feature of this year’s program will be a\u00a0Moth Workshop<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0conducted by experienced story telling instructors. Moth workshops seek to aid participants learn to shape selected life experiences into well crafted stories, which are then presented to peers and members of the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n

The AWDF Women Writers Workshop sets out to give African women writers the space, time and enhanced skills to enable them write in compelling ways about a range of social, economic and political issues of concern to African women.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvia Vollenhoven<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Knight International Journalism Fellow<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Sylvia Vollenhoven is a Knight Development Journalism Fellow who is leading a project to improve coverage of poverty and development issues in Ghana.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

An award-winning journalist and media trainer from South Africa, she is the founder of the VIA \u2013 Vision in Africa media organization, which has spearheaded innovative international training initiatives. As the Africa representative for the Thomson Foundation, Vollenhoven also was the lead trainer for the Foundation’s first-ever documentary filmmaking course at Cardiff University in 2008.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

More recently, she brokered a collaboration between the Foundation and key African partners to launch the Africa Means Business (AMB) project, a long-term, pan-African training initiative for business journalists. Vollenhoven served as the facilitator for the AMB pilot training seminar in Nairobi in June 2009.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In the early 1990s, Vollenhoven was the Southern African Correspondent for the Swedish newspaper,Expressen, and was awarded Sweden\u2019s top journalism prize, one of many awards she received for her work. She later went into broadcasting, joining the South African Broadcasting Corporation, where she held a variety of positions over the years, including reporter, producer, trainer and manager. Subsequently, she has been a consultant for the SABC and for the Kaiser Family Foundation, training broadcast media professionals across Africa.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

For 10 years, Vollenhoven served as the Southern Africa Coordinator for the International Public Television (INPUT) organization, raising the profile of public broadcasting in the region.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Les candidates ont \u00e9t\u00e9 choisies gr\u00e2ce \u00e0\u00a0un processus rigoureux\u00a0\u00a0parmi\u00a0plus de 200 candidatures d\u00e9pos\u00e9es apr\u00e8s que l’appel d’offre ait \u00e9t\u00e9 lanc\u00e9\u00a0en Avril de cette ann\u00e9e.<\/span><\/p>\n

L’atelier est organis\u00e9 en collaboration avec l’Association des femmes \u00e9crivains ougandaises (FEMRITE), une ONG qui promeut le d\u00e9veloppement de l’\u00e9criture cr\u00e9ative en Afrique \u00e0 travers des ateliers et des cours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Les ateliers Moth cherchent \u00e0 aider les participantes \u00e0 apprendre \u00e0 s\u00e9lectionner et\u00a0fa\u00e7onner des exp\u00e9riences de vie dans des histoires bien con\u00e7ues, qui sont ensuite pr\u00e9sent\u00e9es \u00e0 leurs pairs et les membres de la communaut\u00e9 locale.<\/span><\/p>\n

L’African Women Writers Workshop d’AWDF vise \u00e0 donner aux femmes \u00e9crivains africaines de l’espace, du temps et un\u00a0renforcement des comp\u00e9tences pour leur permettre d’\u00e9crire de mani\u00e8re convaincante au sujet d’un \u00e9ventail de questions sociales, \u00e9conomiques et politiques qui pr\u00e9occupent les femmes africaines.<\/span><\/p>\n
