{"id":4537,"date":"2015-04-21T12:26:07","date_gmt":"2015-04-21T12:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.africlub.net\/awdf\/?p=4537"},"modified":"2015-10-27T15:27:13","modified_gmt":"2015-10-27T15:27:13","slug":"liberian-rural-radio-stations-help-in-ebola-fight-thanks-to-awdf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/liberian-rural-radio-stations-help-in-ebola-fight-thanks-to-awdf\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberian  Rural Radio Stations Help In Ebola Fight Thanks To AWDF"},"content":{"rendered":"<span lang=\"en\">The African Women\u2019s Development Fund\u2019s short-term grant to Liberia\u2019s Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA) has enabled female-led community-based organizations and youth groups to organize Ebola prevention education in informal settlements in Montserrado and six other counties in Liberia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">The group\u2019s engagement of local and rural community radio stations worked wonders in the effort to spread the message about the dangers of Ebola, as they urged communities to heed warnings from the Ministry of Health and to follow protocols ensuring that they remained aware of the disease and did not become complacent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">The radio stations conducted live talk shows with community leaders discussing the Ebola virus, preventive measures and ways communities could work more closely to protect their people. These talk shows, especially in rural communities, were done in local vernacular language, for a wider reach and accessibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">GPFA provided sub-grants to twenty organizations and 15 media stations spread across Montserrado, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Rivercess, Bomi, Margibi, Grand Gedeh, Bong, and Nimba Counties. AWDF\u2019s grants of $600 to each community organizations and$100 to $300 to each media house, emboldened them to stand up in their communities and help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">The group also gave grants for soap and hygiene materials, training of community and community actors on signs and symptoms of Ebola and contact tracing. Women and young girls were in the forefront of many of these efforts.<br \/>\nThrough GPFA\u2019s collaboration with media institutions, many members of the public came to accept that Ebola was not deliberately spread by the government, as was widely believed across parts of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Another major accomplishment has been the engagement of community-based organizations in community awareness on the rights of girls and women. As the affected countries cautiously wait for the outbreak to be declared over, there is still the need to further strengthen the capacities of rural organizations to prepare them against future emergencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">To date Ebola has killed over 10,000 people in the world\u2019s worst outbreak, after infecting close to 24,000 in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">La subvention \u00e0 court terme du Fonds Afriain de d\u00e9veloppement de la Femme\u00a0pour Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA) au Liberia a permis aux organisations communautaires dirig\u00e9es par des femmes et des groupes de jeunes\u00a0d&#8217;organiser l&#8217;\u00e9ducation et la pr\u00e9vention \u00e0 Ebola dans les quartiers informels de Montserrado et six autres comt\u00e9s du Liberia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">L&#8217;engagement de l&#8217;ensemble des stations de radio communautaires locales et rurales a fait des merveilles dans l&#8217;effort de\u00a0diffusion de message sur les dangers du virus Ebola, comme ils ont exhort\u00e9 les communaut\u00e9s \u00e0 tenir compte des avertissements du minist\u00e8re de la Sant\u00e9 et de suivre les protocoles assurant qu&#8217;ils restaient conscients de la maladie et ne pas devenir complaisants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Les stations de radio ont organis\u00e9 des d\u00e9bats en direct\u00a0avec les dirigeants communautaires afin de parler du virus Ebola, des mesures pr\u00e9ventives et des fa\u00e7ons qu&#8217;ont les communaut\u00e9s pour\u00a0collaborer plus \u00e9troitement pour prot\u00e9ger leur peuple. Ces talk-shows, en particulier dans les communaut\u00e9s rurales, ont \u00e9t\u00e9 faites dans en\u00a0langue vernaculaire, pour une plus grande port\u00e9e et accessibilit\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">GPFA a fourni des sous-subventions \u00e0 vingt organisations et 15 stations de m\u00e9dias r\u00e9partis \u00e0 travers Montserrado, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Rivercess, Bomi, Margibi, Grand Gedeh, Bong et Nimba. Les subventions d&#8217;AWDF de 600 $ \u00e0 chacun des organismes communautaires et de 100 $ \u00e0 300 $ pour chaque maison de m\u00e9dia, les a enhardis pour se tenir debout dans leurs communaut\u00e9s et venir en\u00a0aide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Le groupe a \u00e9galement donn\u00e9 des subventions pour l&#8217;hygi\u00e8ne, du savon et du mat\u00e9riel, des\u00a0formation \u00e0\u00a0la communaut\u00e9 et \u00e0 des acteurs communautaires portant sur les signes et sympt\u00f4mes d&#8217;Ebola et le d\u00e9pistage. Les femmes et les jeunes filles \u00e9taient \u00e0 la pointe de bon nombre de ces efforts.<br \/>\nGr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la collaboration de GPFA avec des institutions de m\u00e9dias, de nombreux membres du public en sont venu \u00e0 accepter que le virus Ebola n&#8217;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9lib\u00e9r\u00e9ment propag\u00e9 par le gouvernement, comme cela a \u00e9t\u00e9 largement consid\u00e9r\u00e9 dans certaines r\u00e9gions du pays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"en\">Une autre r\u00e9alisation importante a \u00e9t\u00e9 la participation des organisations communautaires dans la sensibilisation des communaut\u00e9s sur les droits des filles et des femmes.
