Violence against women continues to be a scourge of society, trapping many women in a sometimes brutal existence marred by physical, emotional and financial abuse.

Global recognition of the importance of health care is relegated to one time of the year, despite the fact that it forms an integral part of one’s existence. Suffering from an illness can mitigate any amount of empowerment a woman may experience despite being safe from violence. So, although 16 days of activism focuses on physical violence, one must not forget the importance of good health.

There is an acute need to ensure that health and self-care are not left out of the narrative of women’s empowerment, particularly within rural communities where women are often unaware of their importance.

Although safety from violence is a priority for women’s well-being, there are other related aspects that are sometimes neglected when addressing their overall welfare. Health and self-care are important parts of the general happiness of women, directly influencing their ability to contribute as effective members of society. Women play an integral role in advocacy, non-paid care work and professional work. And their capacity to carry these roles can be greatly diminished by poor health.

One facet of health that concerns many women today is breast health. While many women, particularly those in urban areas, are aware of issues surrounding breast health, in the rural areas, it often falls to the wayside in favour of what are considered to be ‘more pressing’ women’s issues such as financial empowerment or Gender Based Violence.

So women within the urban areas remain more aware of the dangers and issues surrounding breast health than their counterparts in the rural regions while the majority of health campaigns often exclude rural women, leaving them with little knowledge of pressing health issues that lead to illness and death.

Although the lowest incidences of breast cancer are said to be found in African countries, rates are steadily increasing. According to the World Health Organisation, 50 percent of breast cancer patients and 58 percent of deaths occur in the developing world. This apparently is due to the lack of early detection methods leading to late diagnosis and treatment.

There are many undiagnosed, untreated and unchecked cases of breast cancer, due to poor access to health care resources, lack of treatment facilitates within those areas, and expensive medication.

Within rural areas, low information often leads to misconceptions and myths about cancers in general. For example a survey done within one rural district revealed that community members associate some cancers with promiscuity. Furthermore, because of the sexual value placed on breasts and the subsequent fear of losing them through mastectomies, many women delay and even refuse treatment. This often causes the cancer to spread, putting the women at further risk.

Mobility is a huge challenge in rural areas. The health care organisations struggle to access these areas and patients are often referred to facilities in urban areas but cannot afford the travel costs. The inability to access resources is worsened by the lack of capacity within rural health care centres in dealing with breast cancer needs and the extensive consultation and referral processes.

Recognising the need for a holistic approach to women’s empowerment and upward mobility, the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) acknowledges health as a fundamental women’s rights issue. AWDF provides support to many organisations that focus on providing healthcare to women within rural settings. Grantee organisations such as the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, Reach for Recovery, Breast Cancer International (Ghana) and the Swazi Breast Cancer Network, all seek to provide support for those suffering from breast cancer. They provide means for early detection, advocate for de-stigmatisation and raise general awareness about the issue.

The Cancer Association of Zimbabwe, an AWDF grantee, provides breast cancer examinations for free, to ease the financial burden of consultation fees. They especially focus on disadvantaged communities with an increased burden in dealing with the disease. Their work is taken further by free post-surgery counselling for patients and their families. The association also provides breast cancer information and support, diagnosis, treatment -including drug support programs- and management.

However, across the continent there are still major hurdles to universal access to funding for breast health care awareness services for diagnosis, treatment and medication.

Kagure Mugo is the co-founder and full-time curator of HOLAAfrica!
