{"id":3747,"date":"2014-08-25T19:40:40","date_gmt":"2014-08-25T19:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.africlub.net\/awdf\/?p=3747"},"modified":"2014-08-25T19:40:40","modified_gmt":"2014-08-25T19:40:40","slug":"in-print-by-jennifer-thorpe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/awdf.org\/OldSite\/in-print-by-jennifer-thorpe\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;In Print&#8217; by Jennifer Thorpe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>In print<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.africlub.net\/awdf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Books.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3748\" src=\"http:\/\/www.africlub.net\/awdf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Books-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"Books\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We want to be in print;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To feel the weight of our words in<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Paper and ink<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And to know their value<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In dollar signs and transformed minds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Journals, magazines, newspapers, novels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The smell of the page like petrichor, awakening the seeds of our creativity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A good book turns us on you see \u2013<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">the bend and curve of the spine<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">akin to a lover\u2019s hand on our upper thigh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We want it to go deeper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We want it to open us,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Please us,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Tease us,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Seize us,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And leave us satisfied.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We arrived there in print.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Tumeric yellow, highlighter blue, binnepoes pink, menstrual red \u2013<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Bright colours that clearly said<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2018We have arrived\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The patterns of old fears removed<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">By the material that we imbued<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">With love, honesty, painful truths.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Our prints imprint on our imaginations<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The possibility that we are bold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We are, we are told.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.africlub.net\/awdf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Pen-and-paper.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3749\" src=\"http:\/\/www.africlub.net\/awdf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Pen-and-paper-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Pen and paper\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We are<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Brave,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Crazed,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Enraged,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Amazed,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But we refuse to be enslaved by context or history.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We are telling our own stories, and telling them loud.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We are each others\u2019 megaphones<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To fight the drone<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Of stale narratives dictating our identity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">We will be in print.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It is our turn to ask the questions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It is our turn to give our answers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>By Jennifer Thorpe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">AWDF\/FEMRITE Creative Writing Workshop 2014 participant<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In print We want to be in print; To feel the weight of our words in Paper and ink And to know their value In dollar signs and transformed minds.
