Looking at the history of change, we know that women’s organisations, and the movements that they are part of, are central actors in crafting this just world. AWDF invests in women’s rights organisations as leaders in advancing women’s rights, and as a core force for demanding accountability and respect, protection and fulfilment of rights for all women from duty bearers at all levels. We know that women’s organisations and movements not only keep gender equality on the agenda but also push for laws and policies to be comprehensive, progressive and inclusive of the concerns of diverse groups of women.
AWDF is one of four Women’s Funds from the Global South managing Leading from the South – a funding initiative created to resource women’s rights activism in the global South over 4 years. The fund was initiated with support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of their commitment to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 5. It supports activism devised, implemented, and led by women’s rights organisations in the global South. The LFS fund is being implemented by four women’s funds: Three are Regional Funds: African Women’s Development Fund (Africa and the Middle East Region), Fondo Mujeres del Sur (Latin America and the Caribbean) and South Asia Women Fund (Asia); and one global fund AYNI – the Indigenous Women’s Fund.
AWDF is mandated to fund in all 54 African countries. Under the Leading from the South initiative AWDF has expanded its grantmaking mandate to include selected countries in the Middle East.
There are three different grant size categories: Yalla, Ananse and Pamoja.

I like the revised proposal template. Just perused through
and the good news is that it does not deviate
from the original version, but instead complements it by including additional
key information surrounding accountability and sustainability. It is clear, succinct,
simple yet compact in terms of information drawn.
No AWDF should make simple the proposal template to facilitate more women to access their grants in Africa. There are so many unnecessary information in the template.
Bravo AWDF you are a truth women rights Advocacy
organization in Africa please keep on your good in soliciting resources for we
the grassroots women led organizations in Africa and you are now in the Middle
East. May the Almighty God will continue to open funding sources for your
works.
Why all women grant-maker organisations tender to make their applications more difficult to other women? Comparing to other grant-makers such as Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundation etc… AWDF’s application is more complicated than big donors. While AWDF was supposed to ensure that women have less difficulty in filling the grant application but application itself has 9 pages with unnecessary information. You can spend months competing the AWDF’s application then later on your application is being rejected after concentrating so much times and efforts. As a women organisation, that shows itself the weakness that they have in understanding a simple grant application. Most of the Grant application require the following information: Organisation Background, Project Objectives, Activities,Outcomes, Monitoring and evaluation, sustainability Plan and Budget including previous and current donors. Based on these information and if further action is required then more information can be requested organisations. NO, THIS MUST BE SERIOUSLY CORRECTED BY AWDF in order to facilitate more African women to access their funding.
In fact this is a Ghanaian Organisation pretending to be an African Grant-maker.
You are absolutely right. I always find it very difficult to apply to AWDF due to the information that they are requesting in their application form. You can even spend more 15 days struggling to complete their grant application. So we have decided not to apply to AWDF. But every time when we apply to Ford Foundation here in Kenya, our applications are being approved while we spend only few hours to complete the full application. AWDF must really change their application form to have more women organisations ad beneficiaries.
Thank you for your comments, which have been transmitted to the relevant team members for consideration and learning. We are sorry that you have not been successful in past applications to AWDF, but you should be aware that our calls for applications are usually oversubscribed many times over, so sometimes even good applications must be turned down.
Our application forms are designed to include the information that is critical for us to conduct the due diligence necessary in being an accountable funding organisation. Every donor does this differently based on their own systems and due diligence mechanisms. We were created by and for African women and consider it vital that we pursue this mission with utmost integrity. Regarding our track record and accessibility, AWDF has funded about 1,290 African women’s organisations in 42 African countries to date. This includes organisations in rural and hard to reach areas, and organisations of underprivileged women. We are based in Accra, and are staffed and governed by women from several countries in Africa.
