Bisi Adeleye Fayemi: A trailblazer in Humanitarian Leadership

When we think of African women, we think of strength, resilience, courage and sisterhood, of making the impossible possible as they spearhead change across the continent.
Bisi Adeleye Fayemi, co-founder of the African Women’s Development Fund and First Lady of Ekiti State in Nigeria, has just been awarded the 2018 Zik Leadership Prize for Humanitarian Leadership in Lagos Nigeria.
Bisi, who served as the first Executive Director of the African Women’s Development Fund from 2001-2010 is well known for her activism in defending and promoting women’s rights. She has vast experience as a Gender Specialist, Social Entrepreneur, Policy Advocate, Politician, Social Change Philanthropy Practitioner, Communications Specialist and Social Sector expert. Bisi is also one of the founders of the African Feminist Forum (AFF).
Bisi runs Above Whispers, an online platform which provides a forum to engage in discussions on various issues including social justice, women’s rights, politics, development, financial security, health, entrepreneurship, popular culture, faith, parenting, relationships.

Bisi Adeleye Fayemi, cofondatrice du Fonds Africain pour le Développement de la Femme (AWDF), Première Dame de l’État d’Ekiti au Nigéria, vient de recevoir le Prix du leadership Zik 2018 pour le leadership humanitaire à Lagos, au Nigéria.
Bisi, qui a été la première Directrice Exécutive du Fonds Africain pour le Développement de la Femme (AWDF) de 2001 à 2010, est bien connue pour son activisme dans la défense et la promotion des droits des femmes. Elle possède une vaste expérience en tant que spécialiste sur les questions de genre, entrepreneur social, défenseuse des politiques, politicienne, philanthrope, spécialiste en communications et experte du secteur social. Bisi est également l’une des fondatrices du Forum Féministe Africain (AFF).
Bisi a créé Above Whispers, un site internet qui engage beaucoup de personnes sur divers sujets tels que la justice sociale, les droits des femmes, la politique, le développement, la sécurité financière, la santé, l’entrepreneuriat, la culture populaire, la foi, l’éducation des enfants et les relations.

The Bread and Butter Series: Growth for Whom? A Pan African Feminist Reflection on Macro Level Economic Policies
The first article in our Bread and Butter series was written by Crystal Simeoni from the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), convenors of the African Feminist Macroeconomics Academy. The article provides a feminist reflection on current neoliberal macro level economic policies in Africa and how they affect women’s lives. The writer argues that current definitions of women’s economic empowerment are too narrow to offer impactful strategies. This follows from increasing analyses that, in as much as Africa’s economies grow, so does inequality between her people. Simeoni argues that current neoliberal macroeconomic frameworks will continue to exacerbate the problem.

AWDF works in two major languages, English and French. AWDF is looking for a bilingual feminist grantmaking consultant to serve as Temporary Cover for its Francophone grantmaking portfolio for a period of 8 weeks. The consultant will report to the Grants Manager, and will work in close collaboration with Grants Programme Officers and administrators, Programme specialists, the Director of Programmes, as well as other members of the AWDF team.
The role is primarily Grant Management and includes the following:
- Review French applications and recommend credible organisations that promote AWDF’s mission, prepare a summary docket for management consideration
- Conduct due diligence on selected women’s rights organisations when needed
- Review grantee reports and provide feedback and recommendations to the Grants and Finance teams
- Provide translation from French into English and English into French concerning grants as needed
- Any other task in keeping with the role as assigned by Supervisor

Les deux langues officielles utilisées à l’AWDF sont l’anglais et le français. AWDF est donc à la recherche d’un (e) consultant (e) féministe bilingue avec une connaissance approfondie en octroi de subventions et qui pourrait travailler sur notre portefeuille de subventions des pays francophones. La durée de ce poste est de 8 semaines. Le/la consultant(e) fera rapport et sera supervisé(e) par le chef du département de subventions. Elle/il travaillera en étroite collaboration avec les responsables et administratrices de programmes de subventions, les spécialistes de programmes, la Directrice de Programmes ainsi que d’autres membres de l’équipe AWDF.
Le rôle est principalement la gestion du portefeuille de subventions qui comprend les éléments suivants:
- Examiner les demandes de subventions en français et recommander des organisations crédibles qui défendent la mission de l’AWDF, faire un résumé de toutes les demandes et les présenter à l’équipe de gestion pour leur considération.

African Women’s Economic Futures Convening : Statement on African Women’s Economic Justice
On September 13th – 15th, 2018, AWDF convened 27 activists, academics, development workers and knowledge producers to strategise and prioritise African women’s economic futures. This convening culminated from AWDF’s fourth strategic plan Shaping the Future, and the accompanying Futures Trends Analysis Report which highlighted the socio-economic implications of anticipated trends in Africa for women and girls. Over three (3) consecutive days, we had extensive conversations, workshop and group activities that helped us build sound advocacy strategies for African women’s economic futures. As an institution committed to resourcing African women’s movements, AWDF believes that this convening was the first step in a journey to better support future-oriented strategies to engender African women’s economic justice and security.
Bread and Butter is the post-convening knowledge series which aims to document the dynamic, critical and radical perspectives of African women thinking about their economic futures. The expression “bread and butter” refers both to the ways in which individuals come to sustain themselves usually through paid work and individuals’ practical, every day needs and concerns.
We begin our Bread and Butter series with a statement from participants of the convening, outlining our priorities and recommendations for securing African women’s economic futures.
The statement was drafted during the convening and finalized a few weeks after by the Drafting Group. Each participant contributed their own expertise to produce a holistic approach to the issues and concerns presented. While the statement attempts to provide a comprehensive analysis and list of recommendations, we encourage other African feminists to expand and operationalize this statement, with proper citation of the original statement. We hope that you find the statement useful to your own strategies.

Consultancy opportunity: Scoping on evidence-based VAW prevention
As part of our capacity building and donor advocacy roles, AWDF is embarking on a process to encourage African women’s funds, allied philanthropic actors, and the African women’s organisations that we support to engage with the growing field of knowledge production and programme development and implementation around evidence-based prevention of violence against women. This initiative has a particular focus on intimate partner violence but will also consider other forms of violence and both evidence generation and programming around them.
The aim of this consultancy is to produce a report mapping key donors, women’s organisations, researchers and other actors in the African region working on evidence-based prevention of violence against women. Although intimate partner violence as focus, we will also look at work on other forms of VAW.

Ending Violence in the World of Work
African women are the backbone of African economies, performing labour to sustain themselves, their families, communities and countries. However, this labour often takes places in precarious conditions, with low pay, lack of protections, and frequent violations of women workers’ human rights including in the form of violence against them. To commemorate the 16 Days of Activism to end Gender-based violence this year, the African Women’s Development Fund is awarding grants to women’s rights organisations raising awareness, building campaigns and mobilising women workers to demand for their rights and an end to violence in the world of work.
AWDF will therefore, support women’s rights organisations and groups employing innovative approaches, methodologies, tools and resources that show positive results in preventing and responding to violence against women and girls in the world of work.
AWDF is interested to hear your great ideas for 16 Days campaigns focused on African women’s rights in the workplace. In keeping with AWDF’s mandate, we accept applications from African women’s organisations, and particularly encourage worker-led initiatives to apply. Let us know how you plan to use $2000 to run an innovative event, campaign or series of activities to address violence against women and girls in the world of work!
We are particularly interested to hear from African women’s organisations mobilising for the protection of women’s rights and an end to violence in the informal economy and in domestic work.
Interested small sized women’s rights organisations should send in their proposal using the AWDF online portal that can be found in the link.
The applicant must also complete and include a financial management assessment form and an outcome form that is provided in the portal.

Eliminer la violence dans le monde du travail
Les femmes africaines sont des piliers de l’économie africaine, et effectuent un travail important pour subvenir à leurs besoins, à ceux de leurs familles, de leurs communautés et de leurs pays. Cependant, ce travail se fait souvent dans des conditions précaires avec des salaires dérisoires, l’absence de protection, et les violations fréquentes des droits fondamentaux des travailleuses sous la forme de violence. Dans le cadre de son appui pour éliminer les violences basées sur le genre de cette année, L’AWDF va octroyer des subventions aux organisations de défense des droits des femmes qui sensibilisent, organisent des campagnes et mobilisent les travailleuses pour défendre leurs droits et mettre fin à la violence dans le monde du travail.
Dans le cadre des activités relatives aux 16 jours d’activisme contre les violences basées sur le genre, l’AWDF cherche à appuyer des organisations de défense des droits des femmes utilisant des approches, des méthodologies, des outils et des ressources innovantes donnant des résultats positifs dans la prévention et les interventions liées aux violences faites aux femmes et aux filles dans le monde du travail.
Seront prioritaires, les initiatives axées sur les droits des femmes africaines sur le lieu de travail, en particulier les initiatives menées par des travailleuses. CALL FOR PROPOSALS:
Over the years women’s rights activists and organisations have worked hard to ensure that the rights of all women including the needs of women with disabilities are catered for in development processes. Despite these efforts, women with disabilities still face multiple barriers in accessing healthcare services, including HIV and AIDS services. These barriers are accentuated for women with disabilities because they are women and also because they are disabled. Women with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to HIV infection because of the persistent discrimination and violation of their rights. It is therefore very important to pay particular attention to the voices and inclusion of the needs of women with disabilities in the HIV and AIDS response if we are to make significant progress.
For the 2019 World AIDS Day celebrations, AWDF will award grants to African women’s organisations and groups to support innovative activities that will strengthen the leadership and voices of women and girls with disabilities in the HIV and AIDS response. AWDF will support activities led by young women with disabilities, activities that highlights the needs of women and girls with disabilities living and HIV and AIDS, community driven events that help raise awareness, build visibility and call for change around the needs and involvement of women with disabilities in HIV and AIDS interventions.
We encourage innovative projects that involve women especially young women with disabilities leading the implementation. We also would prioritise activities that focus on building and strengthening movements that promote the rights of women living with HIV and disability.
We particularly welcome applications from organisations led by women living with disabilities and women living with HIV and AIDS.
AWDF encourages innovation- so do send in your creative ideas! Projects may include activities that;
- Build the confidence of women and young women with disabilities living with HIV and AIDS to speak out and demand for HIV services for women living with disabilities
- Increase the knowledge of women and young women with disabilities living with HIV and AIDS to take preventive measures against HIV and AIDS infection and reinfection
- Set the agenda for addressing the drivers causing HIV and AIDS infection among young women with disabilities
- Promote HIV and AIDS programming for women and young women with disabilities
- Educate key stakeholders (Health providers) and the community on the challenges faced by women and young women with disabilities living with HIV and AIDS in accessing health care
- Hold duty bearers accountable for addressing HIV and AIDS issues among women with disabilities
- Use technology, arts, culture and sports to create awareness around disability and HIV and AIDS issues
- Raise awareness among policy makers about the barriers faced by women and young women with disabilities in accessing HIV services

Au fil des ans, les activistes et les organisations de défense des droits des femmes ont travaillé sans relâche pour que les droits de toutes les femmes, y compris les besoins des femmes vivant avec handicap, soient pris en compte dans les processus de développement. Malgré ces efforts, les femmes vivant avec handicap sont encore confrontées à de nombreux obstacles pour accéder aux services de soins de santé, notamment les services liés au VIH/SIDA. Ces obstacles sont plus sérieux pour les femmes vivant avec handicap parce qu’elles sont non seulement femmes mais aussi vivant avec handicap. Les femmes vivant avec handicap sont plus vulnérables à être infectées par le VIH en raison de la discrimination persistante et de la violation de leurs droits. Si nous voulons réaliser des progrès significatifs, Il est très important d’accorder une attention particulière aux voix et à la prise en compte des besoins de ces dernières liés au VIH.
Dans le cadre de la Journée Mondiale de lutte contre le SIDA, 2019, l’AWDF va octroyer des subventions pour appuyer des activités novatrices qui renforceront le leadership et amplifieront la voix des femmes et des filles vivant avec handicap dans leur lutte contre le VIH/SIDA ; les activités qui exposent les besoins des femmes et des filles vivant avec handicap et le VIH/SIDA ; des activités de sensibilisation, de visibilité organisées par des communautés ; des activités qui promeuvent des changements positifs par rapports aux besoins des femmes vivant avec handicap dans leur lutte contre le VIH/SIDA
Nous allons privilégier les projets novateurs impliquant les femmes en particulier les jeunes femmes vivant avec handicap dans la mise en œuvre des projets. Seront aussi prioritaires, les activités axées sur la création et le renforcement des mouvements qui promeuvent les droits des femmes vivant avec handicap et le VIH.
Nous accepterons des candidatures venant des organisations dirigées par des femmes vivant avec handicap et le VIH/SIDA.
L’AWDF est passionnée par l’innovation et vous encourage donc à envoyer vos idées créatives ! Les projets peuvent inclure des activités telles que :

- Les projets sur les initiatives qui tendront les autorités responsable surtout en ce qui concerne les questions liées au VIH/SIDA chez les femmes vivant avec handicap.
- Les projets qui vont utiliser la technologie, l’art, la culture et le sport pour la sensibilisation sur les questions liées au handicap et au VIH/SIDA.
- Les projets qui visent à sensibiliser les décideurs sur les obstacles rencontrés par les femmes et les jeunes femmes vivant avec handicap dans leurs accès aux services liés au VIH.

The Power of Narrative: AWDF presents the Vagina Monologues
This International Women’s Month, the African Women’s Development fund celebrates the power of Narrative, both on the collective and on the individual level. Throughout history African women have been rebellious change-makers, advocating for their independence and finding ways to gain power in societies that oftentimes restricted them from having full autonomy. It’s important for us at AWDF to celebrate the stories of these women and highlight the ways in which African women continue to own their own narratives. We know just how strong storytelling can be. It can transform nations, inspire and teach whilst reminding us of the art that our own lives have the possibility be, if we’re brave enough to take the first hesitant steps towards something different.
As part of our celebration of Narrative, this year we will be collaborating with the Global Arts and Development Centre in a performance of the Vagina Monologues. This is a collection of a varying number of monologues performed by a broad spectrum of women. Each monologue examines aspects of the feminine experience, touching on everything from HIV and FGM to birth and the female orgasm. The play was written by Eve Ensler and premiered in 1996. Since then it has been updated and performed hundreds of times around the world with various adaptation made by different casts.
We’re excited to partner with the Global Arts and Development Centre to bring this years performance to life, and invite people to come, watch and talk about what they see, and who they see represented in the work. This play forces us to think of the nature of womanhood and how we see and experience it in our daily lives. We invite the general public to come and witness with us the power of Narrative in action, on Friday March 23rd 2019, at the Law Faculty Auditorium, University of Ghana, Legon, at 6.00 pm.
