About AWDF
The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is the first African-wide grant-making foundation which was established to provide grants, capacity building and technical assistance to African women’s organisations. The vision of AWDF is for African women to live in a world in which there is social justice, equality and respect for women’s human rights.
To this end, our mission is to mobilise financial resources to support local, national and regional initiatives led by women, which will lead to the achievement of this vision. AWDF raises money and makes grants for the support of non-profit African women’s organisations working for social justice, equality, respect and peace.
Background to the project
In 2016, AWDF developed a new strategic plan directing the organisation’s focus, strategies and program activities over the next four years from 2017 – 2020. As part of the strategic plan process, AWDF conceptualised a scenarios project in order to have a conversation about how the future of women’s rights in Africa might evolve over time. This report, therefore, highlights the process of the scenarios building exercise, examines the trends, issues and opportunities available and describes the different futures that could occur in Africa regarding women’s rights and empowerment. The scenarios point out critical issues to look out for in the sector. Scenarios are stories describing alternative futures and how they might come about. Scenarios also act as signals to watch out for in the future.
The scenarios, therefore, responded to the question:
What is the future of women’s organising in response to these trends by 2030 and what is AWDF’s role in this context?

Scope of Work
To develop a concept for the visual design and layout of the four different scenario stories for digital dissemination. We are looking for compelling and innovative expressions of the stories with a particular interest in illustration, and if possible, animation as modes of design.
To visually design and layout the four scenario stories for simple digital circulation (hi-res, multimedia formats must convert to popular forms, i.e. web link, PDF, .jpg. png, gif, etc.)

Mis en place par les Pays-Bas, le dispositif de financement Leading from the South s’adresse aux organisations et aux réseaux de femmes dans les pays du Sud. Il vise à soutenir leur action en faveur de l’autonomisation féminine dans les domaines politique, social et économique en Afrique, au Moyen-Orient, dans la région Asie-Pacifique, en Amérique latine et aux Caraïbes. Géré par des fonds dédiés aux femmes solidement établis dans ces régions, le dispositif lance un appel à propositions.
Le dispositif Leading from the South (LFS) contribue à la réalisation de deux objectifs prioritaires de la politique néerlandaise de développement : la promotion des droits des femmes et de l’égalité de genre, et le renforcement des organisations de la société civile. Les réseaux et organisations de femmes jouent dans les pays du Sud un rôle essentiel par l’influence qu’ils exercent sur les pouvoirs publics, les gouvernants, les communautés, les entreprises et d’autres protagonistes en vue de parvenir à l’égalité des sexes et à l’autonomisation des femmes et des filles (objectif de développement durable no 5). Le LSF favorise la coopération transfrontalière et fait le lien entre les organisations de terrain et les réseaux ou mouvements aux niveaux national, régional et mondial.
Le dispositif s’appuie sur l’octroi de subventions, le renforcement de capacités, le lobbying et la sensibilisation de sorte à fournir aux organisations des instruments pour influencer les politiques, contrer les rapports de force et faire reculer l’exclusion, la discrimination, la violence et les inégalités de traitement. Doté d’un fonds maximum de 40 millions d’euros, le LFS sera mis en œuvre de 2017 à 2020. Il est géré par le South Asia Women’s Fund (SAWF) pour la région Asie-Pacifique, par le Fonds de développement des femmes africaines (AWDF) pour l’Afrique et le Moyen-Orient, par le Fondo Mujeres del Sur (FMS) pour l’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes et par l’International Indigenous Women’s Fund Ayni (FIMI) pour les femmes autochtones dans tous les pays du Sud.
Les appels à propositions pour la région Asie-Pacifique, l’Afrique et le Moyen-Orient sont déjà ouverts en ligne. Ceux concernant l’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes ainsi que les femmes autochtones du Sud seront respectivement lancés le 13 et le 20 février 2017.

New Dutch funding facility ‘Leading From the South’ open for proposals

The Netherlands has launched its ‘Leading From the South’ funding facility for women’s organizations in the Global South. This new facility supports Southern women’s organizations and networks striving for the political, social and economic empowerment of women. It will be active in Africa, the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific region, Latin America and the Caribbean. The ‘Leading From the South’ facility – which is being managed by well-established women’s funds in these regions – is now open for proposals.
‘Leading From the South’ (LFS) contributes to two Dutch development policy priorities: Advancing women’s rights and gender equality and strengthening civil society organizations. Southern women’s organizations and networks play a key role in influencing governments, leaders, communities, businesses and other actors to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls (Sustainable Development Goal 5). The LFS promotes cooperation across borders and links grassroot organizations to networks and movements at the national, regional and global level.
LFS works through grant-making, capacity building and lobby & advocacy, thus providing organizations with tools to influence policies, tackle unequal power relations and reduce exclusion, discrimination, violence and unequal treatment. The LFS facility funds amount to 40 million Euro’s in total and runs from 2017 to 2020. LFS is managed by the South Asia Women’s Fund (SAWF) for the Asia-Pacific, the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) for Africa and the Middle East, the Fondo Mujeres del Sur (FMS) for Latin America and the Caribbean, and the International Indigenous Women’s Fund Ayni (FIMI) for indigenous women across the Global South.
Calls for proposals for the Asia-Pacific region and for Africa and the Middle East are currently open and online. Calls for proposals for Latin America and the Caribbean for indigenous women across the Global South will open respectively on 13 and 20 February 2017.

Leading From the South: Call for Proposals
[tp lang=”en” not_in=”fr”] Looking at the history of change, we know that women’s organisations, and the movements that they are part of, are central actors in crafting this just world. AWDF invests in women’s rights organisations as leaders in advancing women’s rights, and as a core force for demanding accountability and respect, protection and fulfilment of rights for all women from duty bearers at all levels. We know that women’s organisations and movements not only keep gender equality on the agenda but also push for laws and policies to be comprehensive, progressive and inclusive of the concerns of diverse groups of women.
AWDF is one of four Women’s Funds from the Global South managing Leading from the South – a funding initiative created to resource women’s rights activism in the global South over 4 years. The fund was initiated with support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of their commitment to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 5. It supports activism devised, implemented, and led by women’s rights organisations in the global South. The LFS fund is being implemented by four women’s funds: Three are Regional Funds: African Women’s Development Fund (Africa and the Middle East Region), Fondo Mujeres del Sur (Latin America and the Caribbean) and South Asia Women Fund (Asia); and one global fund AYNI – the Indigenous Women’s Fund.
AWDF is mandated to fund in all 54 African countries. Under the Leading from the South initiative AWDF has expanded its grantmaking mandate to include selected countries in the Middle East.
There are three different grant size categories: Yalla, Ananse and Pamoja.

AWDF is searching for an energetic, enthusiastic and passionate person for the position of Junior Finance Assistant. You must have the relevant skills, knowledge and experience to support the work of this innovative women’s rights organisation. Additionally, you must demonstrate a passion for the achievement of women’s rights in Africa and exemplify values which include integrity, discipline, innovation, solidarity, non-discrimination and respect for all people.
BACKGROUND
The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is a pioneering grantmaking foundation headquartered in Ghana, founded by and for African women. Since 2001 we have awarded over USD$30 million in grants to support leading women’s rights organisations and feminist movements across Africa.
JOB SUMMARY
As the Junior Finance Assistant, you will support the Finance Department of the organisation to achieve the overall objectives of accountability, transparency and integrity in the planning and implementation of AWDF’s work.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide support for the processing of transactions and accounts payable to suppliers.
- Prepare vouchers and process payments for all authorized payments due.
- File all supporting documents for every transaction for easy access and reference.
- Ensure all transactions are properly recorded and posted into the accounting software.
- Prepare and reconcile all cash books to the bank statements accurately and timely.
- Assist in the preparation of detailed periodic financial reports to stakeholders.
- Support all external and internal audits of the organisation.
Other Duties:
- Perform other financial duties as may be assigned.
- Assist with special projects as assigned.
- Be an active participant in the planning, implementation and reporting of all organisational activities
Competencies required:
- Strong command of written and spoken English
- Computer skills especially in excel spreadsheets and other financial accounting software.
- Excellent team spirit, presentation and interpersonal skills;
- Must be self-confident and willing to learn
- Willingness and capacity to act and implement appropriately within the established finance procedures.
- Prioritize work to meet goals and objectives within the acceptable time frames.
- Handle sensitive information in an appropriate manner, including maintaining high levels of confidentiality.
- Must exhibit and practice high levels of integrity and dependability.
- Handle stressful situations with ease and composure.
- Knowledge of the SUNSYSTEMS accounting software is an advantage.
Qualification:
Academic Requirements: First Degree (or its equivalent) in accounting, finance, or related discipline.
Experience: Two years of relevant experience in finance and accounting in the public or private sector.
