L ’objectif de l’atelier de trois (3) jours sur la Programmation axée sur les résultats (RBP) est d’apporter un appui aux bénéficiaires du Fonds de Développement pour la Femme Africaine (AWDF) dans les domaines de l’application du RBP dans leurs organisations et de la conception de leurs programmes. Au total, 17 participantes ont pris part à l’atelier, deux membres de l’équipe de l’AWDF, un interprète et une animatrice. La liste des participantes et le programme figurent en annexe. Le présent rapport est structuré comme suit: 1) Résumé du contenu de l’atelier; 2) Observations et commentaires du formateur sur l’atelier; et 3) Recommandations et suggestions aux fins du suivi.

Background
In 2014, the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) launched a feminist coaching project on leadership for women leaders of its grantee organisations. In 2015, the project was expanded to include strengthening governance frameworks within participating organisations. The project is based on our knowledge of the persistent challenges of African women’s organisations with issues related to resource mobilisation, communications, governance, leadership transition, safety and wellbeing. Given these constraints and the external context women’s organisations work in, they tend to focus on narrow short-term advocacy or urgent service-delivery projects, with little capacity to expand alliances, envision innovative strategies and be forward thinking.
This coaching project seeks to develop the individual leadership skills and values of participating CEOs/EDs as well as those in second level management. It is also aimed at strengthening the institutional and governance structures of participating organisations and providing an enabling framework fortheirrelevance and sustainability. At AWDF, we believe that a well-grounded leader in feminist values, ideology and clarity of purpose can accelerate the process of social justice and development effectively. Therefore, investment in both individual leaders and governance frameworks of African women’s rights organisations is vital.
By September this year, the third batch of 10 AWDF grantee organisations and 20 women leaders will be completing the coaching project. So far, these grantees are reporting improvements in leadership and communication styles, effective staff management and active engagement of their board members. Leaders have improved their visibility and fundraising abilities through written articles and their media appearances.
3 rd Coaching Cohort: Project Duration & Methodology
This is a 9-month coaching project on leadership and governance from November 2017– July 2018. The project is targeted at CEO/EDs/Programme Managers/Coordinators and those in second level management of AWDF grantee organisations within the age bracket of 18 – 40 years.
The coaching project will entail the following:
1. Attending the 7 th Chief Executive Officer (CEO) forum. This is a 3 day event for orientation, skills sharing, strategy development and networking for participating leaders, coaches and AWDF. This event will be held in October 2017. (Venue and dates will be communicated later)
2. Engaging in one-on-one coaching via phone calls, email, Skype conversations and occasional inperson meetings with their personal coaches from November 2017 – July 2018
3. Governance strengthening activities for boards of participating organisations, twice within the 9 months.
4. Writing of opinion pieces or articles by leaders about their work and development.
5. Participating in at least one AWDF skill building training/workshop where necessary.
Who Should Apply?
Interested organisations should fulfil the following criteria in order to be considered for this project:
✓ Be an AWDF grantee and should have received grants from AWDF in the last 3-5 years
✓ The organisation should have an existing board which will be available for the governance strengthening trainings.
✓ The organisation should have a minimum of 3 full-time staff
✓ The organisation should have access to reliable internet and be able to use Skype and email.
✓ The organisation should have functioning office space with basic office infrastructure.
✓ The organisation should work on any of these themes: Body and Health Rights (focus on ending Violence against Women, and Reproductive Rights) and Economic Security and Justice (focus on Economic Empowerment and Livelihoods) with women, especially young women.
✓ Two staff members from an organisation’s leadership. That is one CEO/ED/programme Manager/Coordinators and one staff from the next level in management.
✓ Applying leaders should be within the ages of 18 – 40 years.
✓ Leaders should be able to communicate in either English or French.
✓ Leaders should be able to communicate via internet, Skype, telephone and email.
✓ Leaders who have demonstrated the potential to develop. The culture industries of our world have historically been dominated by men and the African continent is no exception.
Women’s engagement in arts, cultural production and sports has led to the transmission of radical ideas, beliefs and attitudes. Women’s participation in cultural economies, also speaks to the immense value and contributions of women and invigorated connections and possibilities for communities across the continent and world. Through arts and sports, women have challenged and broken stereotypes, amplified the demands of women’s and feminist movements, raised resources, and spread messages of social change. Arts, culture and sports are critical sites for social transformation and movement building.
In spite of this work, women practitioners in arts, cultural production and sports face persistent restraints from intimidation, harassment, and theft of work to isolation, immobility, burnout and limited access to networks of care, support, and resources of sustainability. By working through a lens of intersectionality, African women are in a key position to speak out against multiple oppressions – gender, sexuality, disability, race, class, ethnicity, geography, etc. – within their fields of work.
Now more than ever, women practitioners are in a unique place to enable deeper engagement with and mobilisation of new constituencies of people, particularly young women.

Nature of Services: Senior Advisor – AIR
Summary of Services
Leads on the direction, management and implementation of AIR- the African Institute for Integrated Responses to Violence Against Women and Girls and HIV/AIDS, reporting to the Director of Programmes.
About AIR:
AIR has been incubated by the Stephen Lewis Foundation since 2008 and developed with advisory input from African practitioner-activists. In 2017 an agreement was reached to host AIR at AWDF, while the nature of its future format is designed and implemented. The core idea of AIR is to create a network of African-based, women-centered/feminist technical support on the issues of violence against women, HIV/AIDS and mental and emotional health and wellbeing. AIR will not run services itself, but rather support creative yet practical thinking on the best ways to respond.
About the role:
The Consultant will guide the process of launching AIR as a fully-fledged initiative, including through development of AIR’s programming, external communications and external profile; and governance and administrative considerations involved in hosting it as an initiative of AWDF or alternative administrative structure, as developed by the consultant in consultation with AWDF and AIR stakeholders, including the former AIR Steering Committee, in keeping with AIR’s collaborative spirit and practitioner-driven vision.
In this role, the Consultant works closely with AWDF’s senior management team, reporting to the Director of Programmes. There will be a close working relationship with members of AWDF programme staff, including the Grants department, the Communications team and the Knowledge Management Specialist. The Consultant will also work with external contractors such as web developers, graphic designers and potential donors, as required.

Specific responsibilities
Programme direction
- Lead on the development of AIR’s strategic direction and programme plan
- Oversee and develop implementation of AIR programming, initially in relation to the two methodological tools developed to date. This includes field testing, consultation and facilitating use of the tools.
- Guide strategic decision making around AIR governance, including leading on the development of thinking as to the nature of entity AIR should become.
- Provide thought-leadership in profiling AIR’s conceptual contributions and frameworks including through writing, presentations in public fora and other analysis of AIR’s work for external audiences, and identifying spaces for AIR partners and programming to be profiled
- Liaise between AIR and its stakeholders, including the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
- Oversee development and implementation of a Learning (Monitoring and Evaluation) framework for AIR
- Act as an external-facing representative for AIR, including as a speaker and contributor in relevant forums
Programme management
- Ensure timely and quality delivery of AIR programming outputs
- Liaise with AWDF (programmes and finance) in management of AIR budget and programme resources
- Identify new funding opportunities, develop applications when appropriate (with support and collaboration as needed), and provide input into funding proposals and reports prepared by AWDF.
- Identify and/or liaise with external contractors (e.g. designers, substantive consultants) as needed for planning and implementing AIR activities.
- Act as the key point of contact with AIR external stakeholders
- Lead on conceptual and content development of AIR website in collaboration with external contractors and ensure AIR website is updated
Other
Participate in broader AWDF events and initiatives as appropriate
Qualifications:
- At least 10 years of experience in managing and implementing women’s rights programming in the African region and/or in relation to AIR’s focal areas
- Background in and expert knowledge of women’s rights, HIV/AIDS and development, humanitarian and/or human rights interventions in the African region and in relation to AIR’s core program areas of psycho social recovery
- Strong project management skills, including strong attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to contribute to a positive, collaborative work environment
- Personal commitment to the values of solidarity, mutual respect, collaboration, inclusiveness, and social justice as embodied in AWDF’s values and articulated in the African Feminist Charter
- Strong computer skills, including excel, databases, word processing, presentation packages (Power Point), internet, and email
- High level of personal initiative/proactiveness
- Strong understanding of and commitment to women’s rights in Africa
- Excellent ability to communicate with warmth, professionalism, clarity and tact via written and verbal mediums
- Comfort with a fast-paced work environment that requires flexibility and multi-tasking

Futures Africa: Trends for Women by 2030
What is the future of Africa if seen through the lens of women’s rights? What opportunities and potential crises lie ahead? Are our current strategies appropriate in light of where Africa is headed? Using a futures lens, how do we contribute to shaping the most just, promising and democratic futures for Africa?
In 2016, AWDF embarked on a strategic planning process focused on the question of how AWDF and African women’s organisations can contribute to shaping the future of Africa. To ground this planning, AWDF worked with Kenyan foresight practitioner Katindi Sivi Njonjo to produce a trends analysis – bringing together the gendered data around Africa’s future trajectories. The resulting report Futures Africa: Trends for Women by 2030 is the first of its kind, offering both statistics and analysis around key political, economic and social trends, and illuminating gaps in the data needed to accurately plan for the future.
Alongside this empirical process, the AWDF staff team and advisors brought in their creative imaginations to generate scenario stories that depict four possible states for Africa in 2030 from a feminist and woman’s rights perspective. The stories are shaped by an analysis that the key independent drivers of change for women in Africa will be:
- shifting demographics (age and migration);
- the expansion and use of ICTs,
- (geo)political power dynamics;
- the nature of education.
The scenario stories have been made into an animation series in collaboration with Zimbabwean animator/illustrator Mationesa Wade, and soundscape by Ghana’s DJ Keyzz.

The Communications Assistant (Francophone) will support the Communications and Fundraising Specialist in the execution of communications initiatives and programmes aimed at increasing the reach, impact and visibility of AWDF by expanding our communications in French. Fluency in both English and French is essential. The Communications Assistant will be expected to produce both written and spoken communications in English and French, with a focus on French. They will also oversee the external translation of key communications products as needed, including checking translations for appropriate terminology in relation to women’s rights.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop content for AWDF managed websites and social media pages with a focus on French language content
- Assist in compilation of AWDF newsletter and production of French language translation
- Track media mentions of AWDF and key stakeholders in French and generate reports as required
- Assist in development and production of promotional or informational material, including grantee stories and other AWDF learning based products
- Assist in compiling departmental reports
- Provide support in organising events
- Update Social media platforms, including posting in French, and respond to queries and posts from the public
- Assist in the development of materials associated with organisational fundraising activities
- Work on specific activities with other AWDF departments including Grants, Knowledge Management and the office of the CEO. This may include support as requested in relation to French translation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
University degree in Communications, Journalism, Social Science, Business Administration or similar discipline.
Experience:
At least two years of experience in the field of public information, online marketing or similar environment
Necessary skills:
Fluency in both written and spoken English and French
Experience in utilizing content management systems (WordPress) for websites
Knowledge of graphic design will be an asset
Excellent writing skills
Good knowledge of key social media platforms (including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
Sound knowledge of women’s rights issues

AWDF’s Scenario Stories were a product of collaborative work and innovative illustration. The Scenario’s process involved examining new trends about the current course that African women and African women’s movements are charting and the ways in which our actions now could spell out radically different futures. The process of breaking down and thinking through these facts resulted in 4 different stories with 4 different outlooks for the future of African women.
These stories were animated and illustrated by Mationesa Wade. The Scenario’s process was lead by Katindi Sivi Njojo and the stories are the collective work of all of AWDF’s staff.

The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is seeking for an expression of interest from an experienced consultant with demonstrable expertise on producing a guideline on monitoring, evaluation and learning (ME&L) with special focus on women’s rights work in Africa. The consultant is expected to develop an easy to use manual with step by step procedures to establishing basic ME&L systems.
The time frame expected for the execution of this study is 20 days between the months of May and June 20, 2017.
