Africa Diaspora ProjectAfricans living in the Diaspora have always participated in the act of giving but are more likely to give informally through family members and money transfers and to specific communities in their indigenous countries. The African Women’s Development Fund’s experience from direct interaction and correspondence with Africans living in the Diaspora indicate that there are Africans and people of African descent in the Diaspora who have expressed the desire to support projects in Africa but lack a clear, trustworthy and accountable way of making their contributions effective. The Africa Diaspora Project aims to offer Africans and people of African descent living in the Diaspora the opportunity to give through an institutional and organised method that will embody the various needs of African women in five thematic areas:
With AWDF, donors can specify the country to which their donations should go to or any particular thematic areas of interest. Our goal in this project is to promote a culture of organised giving in Africa, particularly for women’s rights. At AWDF we say “Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is” and the African Diaspora Project aims to make this a reality. By putting our money into institutional African organizations such as AWDF we are making efforts to make Africa a better place, through the people who nurture it the most, African women. African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is a grant-making foundation which supports local, national and regional organisations in Africa working towards women’s empowerment. AWDF through institutional capacity building and programme development seeks to build a culture of learning and partnerships within the African women’s movement. AWDF has funded over 600 women's organisations in 41 African countries. AWDF’s grants range from U$1,000- U$50,000, and multi-year grants of up to $120,000 can be made to grantees engaged in strategic work.
