The African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF) is a grant making foundation that supports local, national and regional women’s organisations working towards the promotion and realisation of African women’s rights. Specialising in grant-making, technical assistance and other focused, tailored movement-building programmes, the AWDF works to strengthen and support the work of African women’s organisations. Through amplifying and celebrating African women’s voices and achievements, AWDF supports efforts that combat harmful stereotypes and promote African women as active agents of change. AWDF mobilises all the resources it disburses.


The role is responsible for leading, planning and managing the Human Resources and Administration function of the organisation through the design, development and alignment of policies, procedures, systems and controls guiding critical human resources interventions, applications and outcomes. Working with the Director of Operations and staff to drive the accomplishment of AWDF’s mission and vision and assure its responsiveness and accountability to its diverse constituents.



Key Performance Areas Key Activities

a) Leadership and Management

 Participate and contribute in the development and setting of AWDF’s strategic plans and direction.
 Responsible for translating AWDF’s strategic agenda into HR strategic plans and ensure operational delivery.
 Drive and coordinate the Human Resources agenda within AWDF, ensuring that all managers are equipped and able to deliver against the annual recurring people management goals and requirements.
 Promote, build and sustain a positive, inclusive organisational culture.
 Work with the Director of Operations and senior management team
 to identify HR risks that the organisation is exposed to and implement appropriate risks management strategies.  Work closely with Director of Operations and senior management to achieve AWDF overarching operational and programmatic goals.

b) Development and implementation of HR strategies and policies

 Develop, review and implement HR policies and procedures that are aligned to the vision, mission and core values of AWDF.
 Keep abreast of all statutory and legislative requirements and changes, ensure compliance.
 Engage management, staff and the Board (where appropriate) in the conceptualisation and approval of the policies and procedures.
 Provide information and create awareness on AWDF policies and procedures, ensure policies are accessible to all staff.
 Conduct continuous research of the matters related to conditions of service, salaries, allowances and other HR policy matters.

c) Effective Human Resources
 Coordinate and implement effective HR services across AWDF
 Coordinate and manage recruitment, selection and induction processes for all staff, ensuring legally sound and clear contracting.
 Manage the consultant contracting process working closely with line managers in developing and reviewing the job descriptions, ensure sign off
 Coordinate the induction of new staff members with their respective line managers
 Develop and implement an effective performance management & development system, coordinate the performance assessment process for all staff working with line managers
 Work with management to develop and implement the training and development plans and procedures for the organisation. Assist with training needs analysis and skills audits.
 Ensure sound HR administration, working with managers to support with probationary processes, performance reviews, leave management, employee termination procedures including exit interviews and the staff hand-over process when staff leave
 Administer and payroll and benefits programmes, ensure timeous and accurate submission of payroll data in line with policies and regulations.
 Facilitate and support disciplinary and grievance matters working closely with the management and staff.
 Prepare and ensure timeous and accurate submission of HR data reports to management.
 Develop, manage the HR and Administration departmental budget, reporting in line with requirements.

d) Organisational Development

 Provide input and coordinate organisational development and change management initiatives, working closely with the Director of Operations.

e) Administration Management

 Manage the development and implementation of administration operating policies and procedures.
 Manage and oversee the administration function including: coordination of AWDF meetings, local and overseas travel management for staff and Board, maintenance of admin record keeping and documentation.
 Coordinate and ensure the establishment and maintenance of the organisational filing system.
 Ensure office functioning and office equipment purchasing are in line with policies and procedures.
 Ensure that the organisational calendar and planning is developed and available.
 Ensure compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety legislative requirements.

f) People Management

 Build an effective team within the HR and Admin department as well as within the wider organisation
 Work within the performance management system to review performance, coach and develop staff and encourage continued learning and development of individuals within the department
 Monitor the team’s performance against the agreed organisational standards and ensure that problems are identified and resolved

g) Other

 Oversee management and maintenance of AWDF investment property and development/upkeep of AWDF office property
 The role holder will from time to time be required to carry out any other duties that are within the scope of the job.

 Experience in managing & developing HR strategies, policies, best practice and standards

 Strong planning and organising skills
 Understanding of computer applications in respect to the above responsibilities.
 Strong interpersonal and persuasion skills with the ability to interact at all levels in the organisation.
 The ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple projects.
 Fluency in spoken English and excellent writing skills J




Required years of experience at this level: 6 -8 years work experience in generalist human resources role, with 4 years management experience Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Required A post graduate degree in Human Resources/ Social Science or similar qualification or related field
